Bottom Line

Don't let the name be misleading, Hostal Tarba is more hotel than a hostel and one of San Antonio's best budget hotels. Updated in 2014, Tarba's 67 contemporary rooms are cool, clean, and basic, with air-conditioning, daily housekeeping, and mini-fridges on request. Family-owned since the '50s, costly updates are slow to progress, though the dated (albeit still pleasant) breakfast room and outdoor pool are next on the list. There are no parking, no smoking, no pets, and no parties, but guests can expect daily happy hour deals on drinks and meals at the Bloom bar and restaurant, plus a cold buffet breakfast is offered. The excellent location puts guests within walking distance to the Sunset Strip, public transportation, and the harbor. Scene

Family-owned property with ongoing upgrades and overall fresh and simple look

Housed in an older building, Hostal Tarba has been a family-owned property since 1953 and is slowly working its way through a full update. In 2014, the hotel's rooms were completely upgraded to a low-frills but modern look, and in winter 2016, the hotel's ground-floor lobby and bar areas were given a fresh facelift. The lobby has a reception desk made of green glass blocks, distressed wood-style tile floors, sleek sliding glass doors, deep-purple walls, stylish turquoise seating, and lots of natural light. However, this breezy and hip space gives way to a dated marble stairway and breakfast room, and an older outdoor pool area. Smack in the middle of San Antonio, Hostal Tarba is a favorite among all ages of friends, couples, and single travelers. While the surrounding area may be known for its crazy parties and the street outside is often bustling, the hotel itself provides an excellent location with a quiet atmosphere thanks to its strict no-party rules.

Location

Quiet but convenient location five minutes up from San Antonio's main road and harbor

Hostal Tarba is located less than a five-minute walk from the San Antonio village entrance. This area is one of Ibiza's notorious party zones, though families can be found here and there. In the area immediately surrounding the hotel, there are a plethora of shops, eateries, bars, a laundromat, and a few pieces of street art. The San Antonio harbor and a small public playground are a five-minute walk down and across the main road. The bus station is located just behind the hotel and around the corner, and it makes stops around the island.- Six-minute walk to Eden and Es Paradise

  • 11-minute walk to the Sunset Strip
  • 12-minute drive to Ushuaia, Privilege, and Amnesia nightclubs
  • 25-minute drive to Talamanca
  • 25-minute drive to Ibiza Airport
  • 28-minute drive to Playa D'en Bossa
  • 30-minute drive to Ibiza Golf Course
  • 35-minute drive to Santa Eulalia Beach
  • 35-minute drive to Es Cavallet Beach
  • 36-minute drive to Dalt Vila

Rooms

Simple and clean contemporary rooms with AC; most with balconies

Room size varies between standard and spacious, particularly for a budget hotel. While the rooms are still basic, the 2014-updated look features contemporary touches like mirrored squares on white walls, pops of color via the bed runners and throw pillows, and lightly spray-painted shapes as wall decor. Dated aspects of the rooms remain in the travertine bathroom countertops and some styles of tile floors. Rooms are configured as singles, doubles, and triples, and often in low season, the doubles are sold as singles giving guests even more value. Most rooms have balconies with wicker or plastic patio furniture. All rooms have shower/tub combos with bulk shower gel and bar soap as the only toiletries, and hairdryers, but no bidets. AC comes standard, and mini-fridges are available on request.

Features

Good amount of features for a value property, including an outdoor pool and restaurant

Part of what makes Hostal Tarba a great value is its on-site features. Renovated and expanded in 2016, the off-lobby Bloom restaurant is a contemporary and lively spot to grab meals, afternoon snacks, and simple cocktails. Guests can check the chalkboard for the daily menu like paella, snack options like pizza and nachos, and the two-for-one happy hour cocktail specials. Orders are taken at the large bar and there's a small seating area under a flat-screen TV. The hotel's spacious breakfast room is off the bar, and it's a partially updated space that still feels dated due to the old-fashioned wall sconces and light fixtures, brown tablecloths, and small framed wall art. There is a mediocre cold breakfast buffet and hot breakfast menu available. The outdoor pool area is surrounded by green shrubs and trees. This area feel dated compared to the renovated lobby and bar, though the two pools are clean. The small deck area surrounding the tile pools doesn't leave much room for loungers, though there's a dedicated sundeck and barbecue area off to the side. Guests also have use of a small game room with a pool table and darts located in the shed at the end of the pool. There is a strict no-pets, no-smoking, and no-parties policy here. Parking is available in a public lot just a few blocks down the street. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
