Bottom Line

The 80-room Hostal Mar y Huerta is a budget property located half a block from the beach and down the street from famous Jacaranda Lounge. The hostel has a pleasant pool with dozens of loungers, a few straw umbrellas, and a snack bar, as well as a casual restaurant serving a cheap buffet for breakfast and dinner. Rooms are clean but basic, with simple wooden furniture, private bathrooms with walk-in showers, and ceiling fans. It is a good pick for families and middle-aged couples looking to spend a relaxing beach vacation on the cheap, but guests should be aware of the many extra fees (for Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, safes, and mini-fridges). For something a little less barebones in a similar location, the azuLine Hotel Atlantic offers many more amenities but also moderately higher rates and a busier atmosphere.

Scene

A value beach property with a quiet vibe

Relaxation-seeking couples and families filter through this easygoing property, which has a white facade and clay tile roof and sits just beyond the blue sea. First open around 50 years ago, the small hotel is still run by the original owners’ grandchildren. Although extensive renovations between 2007 and 2012 gave it a fresher feel, the property’s unassuming essence remains. The lobby has a small, homey seating area with a couple of couches and a wooden front desk, as well as a separate lounge area with a long padded bench and two carved-wood coffee tables. Simple wooden furniture, pastel-colored accent walls, and a beige palette make room decor equally no-frills. However, everything is kept spotless, and the hostel offers overall good value for money. The location a two-minute walk from a pleasant sandy beach is a major plus, as well.

Location

Half a block from the beach in family-friendly Es Canar

The hostel is located on a quiet street in central Es Canar lined with small shops selling beach gear and souvenirs. The town’s main beach can be found half a block from Hostal Mar y Huerta, and famous Jacaranda Lounge is located down the street, about 10 minutes' drive. The main bus and taxi stops are just opposite the hostel, making moving around Ibiza easy and cheap. The ferry to Formentera and to other towns on the island is also within easy walking distance on the beach, while Punta Arabí’s popular hippie market (on Wednesdays only) can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. Ibiza Town and the airport are a half-hour drive away.

Rooms

Basic, clean rooms with bathrooms and balconies

The property’s 80 rooms are all bright and clean but downright barebones. All units received updates between 2007 and 2012, and have beige floors, accent walls in pastel colors, simple wooden furniture, and basic amenities such as ceiling fans, small desks, and balconies furnished with plastic chairs (on most). Some rooms have lovely floral paintings on the walls, while others are decorated with charming floral-print bedspreads. Bathrooms are nice and clean, and offer nicely sized showers (or tubs in some rooms), mirrors with mosaic-tile frames, and cream- or clay-colored tiling. Although rooms are overall comfortable for the price, they lack basic amenities such as TVs and toiletries. Plus, guests on tight budgets may want to know that there are steep fees for Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, safes, and mini-fridges.

Features

A pleasant pool, a buffet restaurant, a playground, two bars, and free parking

The hostel has a small, quiet outdoor pool with a relaxing atmosphere, a couple dozen white plastic loungers, and a few straw umbrellas. The blue mosaic-tile shower is another nice feature of the pool area. The bar offers poolside seating for drinks, and the snack hut serves fast food and cocktails. For larger meals, the small restaurant offers a cheap buffet for breakfast and dinner, although there are also a few a la carte options. There is no kids’ club here, but those traveling with kids may find the pool and the sandy playground convenient amenities. Free parking is a great perk; Wi-Fi is only available for a fee. The beach is lined with chairs and is a lovely place for lounging, and guests can rent plastic paddle boats right on the sand.
