Bottom Line
The 147-room Abrat Hotel is a good mid-range option for those who want a relaxed location near restaurants, bars, shops, and marina of San Antonio. Standard rooms are attractive and come with balconies, but they have dated bathrooms. Premium Rooms, meanwhile, are in the new wing and they're more sleek and spacious. The contemporary pool area has drink service and great views of the sea, while the garden-level relaxation area is a popular spot to read in the shade. Breakfast is free, though it receives mixed reviews, and half-board options are available in the main buffet restaurant. The small gym and hammam in the basement are underwhelming. For a more local experience closer to the action, check out Hostal Maria.

Relaxed spot slowly upgrading its few remaining dated areas
Abrat Hotel is a mid-range property with its eye on achieving upscale status. Originally built in the 1970s, the hotel is about as old as its average guest. Though frequent facelifts and upgrades help keep most of the property looking fresh, renovations tend to shine a light on the dated aspects, particularly the outmoded bathrooms in modernized rooms and different flooring in the main restaurant. Although the hotel plans to renovate all areas, as of fall 2017, expect blah sitting couches and black-metal partition walls in the lobby, a stylish pool area (revamped in 2016) with bright-orange loungers and glass wall panels, mauve hall carpets, and stylish rooms.
During the summer months, Abrat attracts a lot of families and friends and couples in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, while end-of-season tends to draw more senior-aged guests, especially large groups from Germany. This is a quieter spot that's a good option for those who would like to be within walking distance of the Sunset Strip and marina in San Antonio, but without all the ruckus of the partying.

Rooms
Contemporary and stylish rooms with balconies
Not all 147 rooms at Hotel Abrat are created equal; several rooms are in the process of being upgraded as of fall 2017), while some are brand new, and others are still stuck somewhere in the middle. The original building is home to the hotel’s collection of Standard Rooms, while Superiors and Premiums are housed in the 2016-opened wing. All rooms include safes, flat-screen TVs, and -air-conditioning, plus mini-fridges and kettles alongside tea and coffee. Bathrooms have basic sachet toiletries, as well as vanity and shoe kits.
Upgrades to Standard Rooms swapped out motel-patterned bedding, dated furniture, mirrored closets, and the peach walls for a contemporary gray-and-white color palette, boxy modern white furniture, panorama photo murals, and open closets. The black-and-white bathrooms were left untouched and have dated marble walls, floors, and countertops. These units come as singles, doubles, or triples, with all beds pushed together but sheeted separately. Sea-view rooms have frosted-glass balconies with modern plastic chairs.
The newer wing’s Superior Rooms and Premium Rooms are gorgeous and have attractive style, pops of color, and lots of space. Superior Rooms have angled beds, adjustable chromogenic lighting, and spacious bathrooms with decorative tiling and large tubs. The warm color scheme and natural light let in by the sliding glass doors help keep the rooms feeling welcoming and fresh. Premium Rooms are corner units that can fit two children and two adults and feature large polished tile floors, glass block walk-in showers with rainfall and handheld showerheads, and a separate whirlpool tub. The dual vanities have the same amenities as lower-category rooms, and they add magnifying mirrors and hairdryers. Expect king-sized beds with rose-gold chain headboards, modern wicker seating, gray laminate furniture, and large terraces with loungers and dining sets.
Features
Outdoor pool and relaxation area, breezy pool bar, and mediocre dining
The Abrat’s 2016-renovated pool area and scrappy yet peaceful outdoor relaxation area are two of its most popular features. The elevated pool deck is home to a good-sized L-shaped pool, sturdy and bright contemporary loungers, and a glass-paneled perimeter that gives way to uninterrupted views of the sea. A large and shady relaxation area is located a few steps down from the pool deck, just out of earshot of the light buzz of the pool and music. Food, drink, and towel service are available by the pool, or guests can order directly from the adjacent and airy Snack Bar, where they'll find a full bar, good-sized menu of pizza and sandwiches, and seating consisting of cafe tables and white couches. This is one of the more lively areas at the hotel.
The main restaurant serves up typical average-quality buffets for a Spanish three-pearl property, with standard dinner items including mint soup, roast turkey, and lasagna. There are options for vegetarians and gluten-free folks, but nothing spectacular. Breakfast is free and receives mixed reviews, and half-board plans are available. While there are a few upgrades to the space, this is one of the hotel's more dated areas, although windows provide views over the pool and out to the water.
Freebies include Wi-Fi and access to the small lower-level gym, where a handful of nearly dated cardio machines and a decent-sized hammam can be found. Other features include courtesy showers for early/late check-ins/outs and occasional weekly events like live music. Pets are not accepted.
