Hotel 73

Hotel 73 is a clean and modern two-pearl hotel with limited, but free, features and a fun and trendy pop culture design throughout. The hotel is situated right next to a subway stop, making it easy to get to most attractions via the rail line in 30 minutes or so. The 49 rooms are hip, albeit small, and come with mini-fridges and free snacks. Rooms sometimes lack windows or are subjected to bothersome noise due to thin walls. The breakfast is free and includes local and international choices. A laundry room and Wi-Fi are other free perks. Via Hotel is a good alternative with similar amenities in the Ximending area, plus it has a free cafe for guests and an industrial chic design.

Hostal Tarba

Don’t let the name be misleading, Hostal Tarba is more hotel than a hostel and one of San Antonio’s best budget hotels. Updated in 2014, Tarba’s 67 contemporary rooms are cool, clean, and basic, with air-conditioning, daily housekeeping, and mini-fridges on request. Family-owned since the ’50s, costly updates are slow to progress, though the dated (albeit still pleasant) breakfast room and outdoor pool are next on the list. There are no parking, no smoking, no pets, and no parties, but guests can expect daily happy hour deals on drinks and meals at the Bloom bar and restaurant, plus a cold buffet breakfast is offered. The excellent location puts guests within walking distance to the Sunset Strip, public transportation, and the harbor.
