Euphemia Hotel

Located on the southern edge of the Canal Ring, the 27-room Euphemia Hotel is a basic, hostel-like property offering a budget stay for those who need little more than a bed and a shower. Rooms range from private double units to 10-person dormitories — all but three of them with en-suite bathrooms. Linens are provided in all rooms free of charge and towels can be rented for a small fee (they’re free in private rooms) but there’s little else in the way of amenities, and bathrooms and furniture are drab. The pleasant lobby lounge has a couple of vending and coffee machines, and a simple breakfast menu with four options is available for a fee every morning. The nearby Budget Hotel Tourist Inn provides a better value, with free breakfast and towels.

Regent House Hotel

The two-and-a-half-pearl Regent House Hotel is a small and pleasant inn that’s a decent option in New Town for travelers who want a cozy stay for a reasonable rate. Restaurants, bars, the Edinburgh Playhouse are within a short walk, and the tram is close at hand for access to the airport and attractions like Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. The only major property feature is a free continental breakfast that draws solid reviews from guests. Most of the 17 colorful guest rooms (plus one three-bedroom apartment in an annex building) are spacious, and all come with flat-screen TVs, DVD players, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms share a bathroom. Breakfast at the nearby Ramsay’s Bed and Breakfast is a more elaborate, traditional Scottish breakfast with black pudding and kippers, but the hotel is a bit farther from attractions.

Hotel Suites Ixtapa Plaza

Located along a popular tourist road, the two-pearl Hotel Suites Ixtapa Plaza is within easy walking distance of Ixtapa’s restaurants and shops, and a seven-minute walk to Playa el Palmar. The 17 rooms are simple and basic, ranging in size from tiny to spacious. The rooms have simple amenities of flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and work tables. Features consist of a pleasant rooftop pool and a handful of common areas. This value option is ideal for those wanting a starting point for exploring Ixtapa and its sister city Zihuatanejo; but those wanting a little more action and amenity choices should consider Park Royal Hotel — it’s a more sophisticated, but pricier alternative.
