Acuarium Suite Hotel

The lower-middle-range Acuarium is a laid-back, retro hotel offering 72 one- and two-bedroom apartments surrounded by green lawns and palm trees. Guests appreciate the great rates, free Wi-Fi, and the nice courtyard pool, but dated rooms and maintenance issues are the norm here. (The newer wing is generally more sought after.) Freebies include Wi-Fi and (basic) buffet breakfast. Food and drinks are generally of good quality and well priced, too. Acuarium resides in a residential neighborhood with authentic local flavor, but the area may not be as safe as other parts (sex workers are a common sight); walking around at night isn’t advised, and families with young kids may prefer to stay elsewhere. Travelers seeking affordability with a more modern feel could try W&P Santo Domingo.

Hotel Hokke Club Asakusa

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Hokke Club Asakusa is conveniently located near the Asakusa subway station, and is walking distance to the popular Senso-ji Temple. Its 186 modern but somewhat spartan guest rooms have desks, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, air purifiers, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, but some lack windows and views. Bathrooms are traditional Japanese-style, with washing stations and separate bathtubs. Facilities are limited, with no restaurant/bar or fitness center, but breakfast is served for an extra fee, and there’s a guest laundry room and vending machines. It’s not easy to beat these rates in the neighborhood, but for a little more, the Richmond Hotel Asakusa adds a restaurant and is located even closer to the Senso-Ji Temple grounds.

Canon Court ApartHotel

Located in a quiet area about a 15-minute uphill walk from central Edinburgh, Canon Court Apartments is a decent value option for business travelers and families on a budget who don’t mind being a bit away from the action. Its 45 apartments are simple and comfortable, outfitted with cheerful decor, full kitchens, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi, but bathrooms, while clean, could use an update. Sofa beds are available in all apartments as well, but there is a fee for extra guests. On-site parking (for a daily fee) is a great perk, and several buses stop right outside the main entrance. Travelers seeking something more upscale and closer to the center may prefer the Princes Street Suites in New Town.
