The Wolcott Hotel

The historic Wolcott Hotel comes in impressive packaging for a two-and-a-half-pearl property, with a chandelier-studded lobby oozing with vintage New York grandeur and a Midtown Manhattan location walkable to Times Square, the Empire State Building, and several subway lines. However, the old-fashioned charm doesn’t quite carry over to the 160 rooms and amenities. Rooms are large enough by New York City standards, and some have Empire State Building views, but furnishings are dated and there are no tea/coffee-making facilities. The small on-site gym and business center are also in need of updating. There isn’t a bar or a restaurant (just free coffee and muffins for breakfast) and guests are charged per-day fees for Wi-Fi. Travelers may prefer the almost equally affordable Broadway at Times Square Hotel, which has free Wi-Fi and free breakfast.

Thongtapan Resort

Situated at the quiet end of Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, the two-and-a-half-pearl Thongtapan Resort attracts low-key travelers looking for a budget-friendly oceanfront getaway. A large sandy beach with loungers and non-motorized water sports for rent allow guests to take advantage of the ocean. The beachfront restaurant receives positive reviews, particularly hot breakfasts that are included in some rates. The 30 rooms range from rustic spaces without air-conditioning or fridges to better-equipped villas with hammocks on their terraces. All units have free WI-Fi, private bathrooms, and fans. Some past guests have complained of rooms up on a hill being difficult to reach. Also be aware there are no pool, gym, or spa. Travelers heading to the Full Moon Party may prefer the more contemporary and amenity-packed Phangan Bayshore Resort.

Hotel Belvedere

With affordable nightly rates and an excellent location in downtown Samara, Hotel Belvedere – Playa Samara is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options in the area. This budget hotel is located on a quiet, residential street that’s within a five-minute walk of local shops, restaurants, bars, and the beach. Hotel Belvedere has 22 colorfully decorated rooms, beautifully landscaped gardens, and a small pool and secluded hot tub. Guests can purchase breakfast for an additional fee, but it isn’t always available during the off-season. Wi-Fi is free and works well across the property. Travelers looking for something a bit more polished might prefer Hotel Villas Playa Samara, a beachfront property with pricier nightly rates.

Sugarloaf Mt. Motel

The 146-room Sugarloaf Mountain Motel is a simple, budget-friendly affair a nine-minute drive north of downtown in Bend, Oregon. Contemporary, albeit generic, rooms are spartan, lacking even drawers or a wardrobe (there’s a few open shelves for clothes), and some guests are dissatisfied with cleanliness. A coffeemaker and TV are provided, however, and some rooms include a microwave and mini-fridge. The hotel has few extras, but a basic free breakfast sweetens the deal, and the outdoor pool is a nice add-on for the price. For comparison, check out Holiday Motel at a similar rate, but closer to the center of town.

MUR Aparthotel Buenos Aires

Aparthotel Buenos Aires is a budget-friendly property conveniently located adjacent to Yumbo Centrum shopping center and a 15-minute walk from the beach. There is nothing quite outstanding about the property, but its 150 apartments, although compact and basic, are clean and feature fully stocked kitchenettes, sofa beds, and flat-screen TVs. Air-conditioning, however, is available for a daily fee and only in some units, which is common for value hotels in the area. The pool is pleasant and heated seasonally, and has a big deck, a whirlpool, and a separate kiddy area. Most guests find the restaurant bordering on mediocre, but the poolside snack bar generally gets good reviews. Families seeking something more lively may want to compare rates at Parque Cristobal Gran Canaria, which features a full entertainment program.

Antler Inn

The two-pearl Antler Inn has been a budget favorite in a convenient location for over 50 years. It’s only a three-minute walk from Town Square, surrounded by local shops and gourmet restaurants that make Jackson a popular vacation destination — but the ski slopes are at least a 20-minute drive. Hotel highlights include a huge indoor whirlpool, sauna, fitness center, laundry room, and free parking, ski life shuttles, and Wi-Fi. The 110 rooms include standard motel rooms and cute mini-cabins with cedar paneling. Both options are clean, with rustic decor, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers — many have fireplaces, but bathrooms are drab and cramped. Many guests wish that breakfast was served. The 49’er Inn & Suites also is downtown and has more amenities including free hot breakfast — but rates are higher.
