Hotel Helvetia

The two-pearl Hotel Helvetia is a simple budget property without pretense or any attempt to offer much beyond its functional rooms with desks, showers, small flat-screen TVs. Spaces are comfortable and generally well-kept, but bathrooms, while tidy, have stall showers with stained grout. The hotel is close to cafes, bars, and restaurants around the Place de la Bastille, and it’s also just a block away from the massive Gare de Lyon train station, making it a convenient spot for travelers planning day trips. There’s a breakfast room and free Wi-Fi througout, but no other on-site facilities. Compare with the Hôtel du Prince Eugene, a boutique with similar rates and amenities, but much more style.

Sunrise Hotel San Pedro

The two-and-a-half-pearl Sunrise Hotel San Pedro is an affordable budget option for travelers, offering a harbor-facing location and proximity to World Cruise Center. The property is under renovation, with plans to overhaul guest rooms and give public spaces a refresh, though much of it was still dated as of our late summer 2017 visit. Facilities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, and the hotel also offers a free continental breakfast, but there are no hot items. Its 110 guest rooms are spacious and well-equipped with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, and Mini-Suites with living areas are available. The Best Western Plus San Pedro Hotel & Suites has modern rooms, but it isn’t close to the harbor and rates can be higher.

Anchor Inn & Cottages

Anchor Inn & Cottages is a cheery, two-pearl property located on Sanibel Island. The property’s nine inn rooms are basic but tidy, offering practical kitchenettes or full kitchens, while the three cottages amp up the charm with their eye-catching A-frame roofs (although decor could use an update in all room categories). It’s not on the beach (which is a short drive away), but the lush grounds are quite inviting, there’s a sizable outdoor pool, as well as a reasonable number of restaurants within walking distance. Travelers looking to stay right on the sands may want to compare rates and amenities with Shalimar Cottages and Motel.

Elk Country Inn

The two-and-a-half-pearl Elk Country Inn offers a peaceful setting and reasonable rates, plus it’s within walking distance of historic Jackson Hole Town Center. The rustic, limited-service property offers 88 traditional hotel rooms and stand-alone cabins that are clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Cabins also include sleeper sofas, and loft-style hotel rooms can accommodate up to six. The property doesn’t have a restaurant or breakfast, but amenities include a small fitness center, laundry room, whirlpool, and free shuttle to the ski slopes in winter. Rates are generally lower than staying downtown, and they’re competitive with cabins at the nearby Cowboy Village, which features an indoor pool.
