Da Kanda Villa Beach Resort

In many ways the two-pearl Da Kanda Villa Beach Resort is well passed it’s heyday and is falling apart at the seams. The hotel is geared towards budget travelers, and most rooms are basically crash pads. Out of the 52 rooms, the only decent options are the Beachfront Bungalows, which feature ocean views and direct beach access. Standard Rooms and Deluxe Cottages are dingy and have seriously dated interiors, with old amenities like tube-style TVs and ineffective air-conditioners. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and an average restaurant and bar with mixed reviews. While the hotel’s main draw is it’s oceanfront setting, unfortunately the area is too shallow for swimming and only limited lounge chairs are provided. For a more remote and idyllic beachfront location, consider the Thongtapan Resort.

Royal Villa Jepun

Royal Villa Jepun is a budget hotel with 10 rooms, located in the hillside village of Sangingan and a 10-minute drive from downtown Ubud. The boutique property features a gorgeous tropical garden setting and the ambience is tranquil and serene. The individual cottage dwellings have garden views and feature Balinese red brick facades, great light and airflow, open-air bathrooms, and spacious balconies. Rooms interiors are outfitted with solid wood furniture and standard modern amenities (no TVs though) though they can look a bit dated. On-site facilities include an outdoor lagoon-style swimming pool and a small restaurant serving vegan and raw meals. For an alternative downtown Ubud hotel, Sri Bungalows is a good option with similar room rates.

Howard Johnson by Wyndham Middletown Newport Area

Situated on a main highway into downtown Newport and near government buildings, the Howard Johnson Middletown Newport Area is an ideal location for business and government travelers, especially with its spacious conference room. The two-pearl hotel has some nice features for families as well, including an indoor pool with an adjacent courtyard, daily free breakfast, and daily shuttle into downtown Newport (for a fee). The 115 rooms are spacious, but simple, and feature flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. All rooms feature a balcony or patio. Travelers looking to be closer to downtown Newport might consider the Newport Hotel and Marina which features a restaurant, convenient location on the water, and heated indoor saltwater pool; though there is a fee for parking and it’s a bit more expensive.
