Days Inn by Wyndham College Station University Drive

The two-and-a-half-pearl Days Inn College Station University Drive is an adequate budget hotel on busy University Drive, roughly seven minutes by car from the Texas A&M University campus entrance. Facilities include a seasonal outdoor pool, coin-op laundry, and business center, and there’s a free breakfast buffet with make-your-own waffles. Its 98 guest rooms are spacious and pleasant-looking, if a bit dated. All come with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi as standard. Travelers who want accommodations with more on-site amenities can consider Comfort Suites University Drive.

Inn on Bellevue

Conveniently located in the Historic District of Newport, the Inn on Bellevue is within walking distance of popular tourist attractions and restaurants. The two-pearl bed-and-breakfast is best suited for couples looking for location rather than amenities — Easton’s Beach is a 20-minute walk and the Perry Mill Wharf is a 13-minute walk away. The 39 rooms are spaced out across three buildings. All are individually designed with period pieces, but come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and modern bathrooms; some have fireplaces or whirlpool tubs. There is a small spa for a fee, while breakfast, snacks, parking, and Wi-Fi are all included in the room rates. Those looking for a more modern take on the bed-and-breakfast scene might consider The Attwater — also in the Historic District — with more amenities, but at a higher price.

Kronos Hotel

Overlooking the blue Gulf of Heraklion, the Kronos Hotel offers value accommodation near the city’s port, sights, and restaurants. Family owners here welcome primarily leisure couples, and contemporary layouts are in keeping with the city location, although they’re low on frills. The 32 air-conditioned rooms have simple decor with romantic touches, balconies, and views of the sea or city. However, they can be noisy. Breakfast is the only meal offered, although a bar serves drinks all day, and unlimited bottled water is free. Budget-conscious travelers seeking a pool should check out the Prince of Lillies, although beach settings here are less central.

Paradise Beach Resort

The 100-room Paradise Beach Resort is a budget-friendly seafront hotel with a vibrant party scene. The beach and its clubs are the main draw, but there are also an on-site restaurant and mini-mart with snacks and sundries. No-frills rooms are air-conditioned and have mini-fridges and safes, but no TVs. Other options include camping and bare-bones cabins, both with communal bathrooms and lacking AC. Inadequate cleaning is a common complaint, particularly in the shared bathrooms. For a cleaner hotel with a bit more polish, check out Super Paradise Hotel in its own cove to the east of Paradise Beach.

Newport Bay Club & Hotel

Newport Bay Club has an ideal location overlooking the water in downtown Newport. Directly on the quaint cobblestones of Thames Street, the hotel is a nice value option for families due to its 36 spacious suites with full kitchens or kitchenettes, sitting areas, and parking for one car. The suites are situated on top of a retail level which houses a small (but modern) fitness center and business center — the usage of both are included in the room rate, and there are some conveniently located coffee shops and delis in lieu of a restaurant at the hotel. For a small fee guests can use the Newport Athletic Club pool, but it is a 10- to 15-minute drive away. The Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina has an equally convenient location with an on-site pool, restaurant, and marina — though there is a daily parking fee and no fitness center there.
