Artful Lodger Inn

Located on a quiet corner in Newport, the charming Artful Lodger Inn is a lovely two-and-a-half-pearl option for travelers looking for the traditional bed-and-breakfast stay. The historic inn features seven individually designed rooms with Victorian decor and modern amenities: air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and some mini-fridges. Two tranquil garden areas include a magnolia tree that’s over 140 years old. The free and tasty homemade breakfast is served each morning in the rooftop Pip’s Cafe. The major downside here is occasional complaints about cleanliness. Those looking for a similar historical experience with more modern amenities might consider the Hotel Viking, which has two restaurants, a fitness center, and an indoor pool — but at a higher price.

Living Hotel

With an open-air yoga studio and a health cafe, the two-and-a-half-pearl Living Hotel resembles many of its competitors in Nosara. Its nine rooms are simply decorated spaces equipped with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and electronic safes, although their best feature could be their private outdoor porches with hammocks. A small pool, free Wi-Fi, loaner beach bikes, and daily yoga classes add to the property’s appeal. Its location is a five-minute walk from Playa Guiones and a handful of local restaurants, too. Despite all it offers, nightly rates are a bit high for the pearl level. Travelers should comparison shop a bit before booking; another hotel in the area that also offers yoga classes and healthful, primarily vegetarian food is the Costa Rica Yoga Spa.

Comfort Suites University Drive

Comfort Suites University Drive is a clean two-and-a-half-pearl chain hotel with a welcoming vibe and plenty of amenities. The highlight here is the outdoor pool and hot tub, though free perks like a hot and cold breakfast and Wi-Fi entice travelers, too. The 20 spacious rooms have all the things a budget traveler might need like microwaves and mini-fridges, but do lack safes. Rooms with whirlpool baths or kitchenettes are also available. The hotel is about an eight-minute drive from the Texas A&M University campus, and is surrounded by plenty of dining options. Travelers could also consider the nearby Homewood Suites by Hilton College Station, which has kitchenettes in all rooms, plus a free evening wine reception.

Primavera Beach Studios & Apartments

The lower-middle-range Primavera Beach Studios & Apartments offers good value for money, a stone’s throw from Malia’s main drag and a sandy beach. Nearby bars and clubs draw a largely British crowd, and features here include a sports bar serving meals and a small outdoor pool that plays host to parties. The 27 studios and apartments are designed for guests traveling in groups, with mostly twin beds, kitchenettes, and outdoor spaces. They’re basic though, and some amenities incur fees. While the young-adult presence finds the property ticks a lot of boxes, it’s not suitable for families or older couples. Budget-conscious families should check out the Notos Hotel, which is quieter, albeit more remote.

Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Gatlinburg, TN

The 77-room Country Inn & Suites by Carlson is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel that’s conveniently located within walking distance of most major Gatlinburg attractions. Rooms are modern, with fresh color schemes of gray and lime green. They’re equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers, and some have furnished balconies. Breakfast is free, as are parking, Wi-Fi, and daily newspapers. The indoor pool is open year-round, but the fitness center is tiny, with just four machines. Still, it’s a nice addition for this often basic brand. Other pluses are coin-operated laundry facilities and a 24/7 computer desk. Pets are allowed for a fee. As an alternative, the nearby Crossroads Inn and Suites is a similar property, with a seasonal outdoor pool and separate kids’ pool.
