Acropolis View Hotel

The clue is in the name at the Acropolis View Hotel, where views of Athens’ iconic monument are as good as its proximity to it. This lower-middle-range property offers 32 rooms with flat-screen TVs, free continental breakfasts, a 24-hour lobby bar, and a lovely rooftop terrace with panoramic views. Excellent positioning a stone’s throw from the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Filopappou Hill makes it a winning pick for sightseeing travelers, and low rates are attractive. Interiors are a basic mix of dated and contemporary, but all considered, it’s an excellent value choice. A touch pricier, the Acropolis Hill Hotel adds in a pool.

Hotel Livemax Shimbashi

The two-pearl Hotel Livemax Shimbashi is a solid, if somewhat humdrum, budget hotel in the Shiba neighborhood of Minato, within a short walk of Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo Tower, and several train stations. Interiors are a bit bland and the hotel lacks food service and facilities, but its 63 guest rooms come well-equipped. All have flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and free in-room Wi-Fi, and units with kitchenettes and balconies are available. Nearby Shiba Park Hotel is a little closer to Onarimon Station and it has a breakfast buffet and restaurants, but room rates run a little higher.

Casa Shanti Niketan

One of the top-rated lodgings in Estoril, Casa Shanti Niketan is a relaxed bed-and-breakfast that’s been family-run since it opened (the house itself has been in the family for the better part of a century). The seven rooms are quiet and decorated in a cozy, homey way that pays homage to the family’s Indian heritage. The property is a great place for travelers wanting a quiet spot to get away from it all, but with day trip opportunities within easy access and a cute town to use as a base. Those looking for something with a more modern vibe might check out the three-pearl Caboia Estoril Hotel (which also has a gym and pool).

Howard Johnson Centro Cardiovascular San Juan

Set on the fourth floor of a cardiovascular hospital in San Juan’s medical district, Howard Johnson is a budget option, primarily designed to provide accommodation for families of loved ones undergoing medical treatment. It shares the fourth floor with a wellness center, basic spa, fitness equipment, and yoga classes. Its 31 rooms are straightforward to the point of being a touch drab, with chain hotel-like decor, private bathrooms, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. There’s a cafeteria in the building and eateries are within walking distance, but confusing access can cause annoyance. While the in-hospital setting is convenient for certain travelers, this is not a vacation-friendly or resort-like property. Travelers seeking a hotel closer to beaches and sights could try Hyatt Place San Juan.
