Pension Te Miti

Pension Te Miti is a budget property with seven basic dorm-style and private rooms, located a 10-minute walk from the beach and 20-minute drive from the airport in Tahiti. Split between two houses — each with their own communal kitchen and shared bathrooms — rooms are no-frills spaces with the bare minimum of beds, towels, fans, and storage space. Unfortunately, wear and tear is evident throughout and one dorm isn’t fully partitioned from a communal area, leading to noise complaints. Amenities are limited to a simple free continental breakfast served outdoors, free snorkeling gear, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. Airport transfers and laundry services are available for a fee. This is one of the cheapest options on the island, but travelers willing to pay more may prefer the modern Tahiti Airport Motel, conveniently near the airport.

Sunset Hill Lodge

The eight-room Sunset Hill Lodge is a cheerful budget option for travelers that want to experience the beauty of Bora Bora without breaking the bank. Run by the on-site owner Gerard, the hotel has an excellent location a three-minute drive from the ferry port, close to a few restaurants, two grocery stores, and shops. Colorfully decorated rooms are divided between those up a steep hill and three along the water, the latter of which are separated from the main building by a road. All units have kitchens, air-conditioning, and outdoor spaces, but furnishings are basic and showing a bit of wear, and there are no TVs. There are no restaurant, pool, or wellness facilities on-site, and amenities are limited to free Wi-Fi, a garden terrace, and laundry services. It’s worth considering the similarly priced, beachfront Village Temanuata.

Rustic River Boutique

The lower-middle-range Rustic River Boutique is set in a simple building with rustic, charming interiors a two-minute walk from the Ping River, on the outskirts of the Old City. While there’s not too much in the immediate area, it’s a 15-minute walk to the Old City. The 12 guest rooms are spacious with simple Thai-inspired interiors and amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Two of the rooms have a small private balcony. All guests receive a free breakfast, with options like omelets, fried eggs, fried rice, and noodles. The hotel can assist with local tour bookings as well as car, bicycle, and motorbike rentals. No swimming pool or spa facilities are available. Rainforest Boutique is an alternative similarly priced hotel to consider and it includes two swimming pools, though it’s farther away from Old City.

Chedi Home

The 20-room Chedi Home is a charming two-and-a-half-pearl guesthouse with an excellent location just outside of Chiang Mai’s Old City. Cafes, restaurants, shops, and temples are within walking distance. Rooms feature bright Thai murals over the beds and are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges with free bottled water, and kettles for tea and coffee. Some have balconies or terraces with views of the chedi that sits right next to the property. Guests rave about the free breakfast buffet, especially the fresh fruit smoothies. The outdoor pool is small, but fine for a cooling dip, and there’s also a little fitness room. Bicycles are available for free. For an even more popular option, check out the nearby Green Tiger Vegetarian House as well, which has an excellent vegetarian restaurant on-site.
