Pigeon River Inn

The two-pearl Pigeon River Inn has the vibe of an average chain property and simple amenities like a seasonal outdoor pool and free basic breakfast. The lobby offers a lovely place to socialize next to a fireplace, while the West Prong Little Pigeon River behind the hotel attracts fishing enthusiasts. It’s an eight-minute walk to WonderWorks and a three-minute drive to Tanger Outlets. The 70 rooms are homey in style and more contemporary than some budget properties in the area. Each is outfitted with mini-fridges and microwaves, and some have balconies and/or fireplaces. Free Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty. Ramada Pigeon Forge North might be a better option for travelers who want a gym and indoor pool.

Hampton Inn West Palm Beach Central Airport

The Hampton Inn West Palm Beach Central Airport is a solid, two-and-a-half-pearl option amid dozens of similar alternatives near Palm Beach International Airport. Every aspect — the lobby lounge, the outdoor pool, and the breakfast area — is modern and well-maintained but squarely mid-range. The 105 rooms are clean and contemporary; they come with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The surrounding commercial park is charmless, and there’s little within walking distance, but there are several chain restaurants within a short drive. For a brief, inexpensive layover, it should get the job done for most guests. For only slightly higher nightly rates, the neighboring Hilton Garden Inn West Palm Beach Airport is newer, more chic, and offers a better restaurant.

The Kinney San Luis Obispo

The Holiday Inn Express San Luis Obispo is a modern, lower-middle-range hotel in a good location that’s just a short drive from downtown and the Cal Poly campus. It’s a handsome property with an appealing lobby, nice outdoor pool, laundry facilities, meeting space, and a free hot breakfast buffet. It also has a fitness center, although it’s cramped and sparsely equipped. Its 100 rooms are clean and contemporary (if generic), with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. But only Suites include microwaves. Throughout, the property has a relaxed and friendly vibe that should make any travelers feel comfortable. Rates are attractive given all that’s included. For those comparison shopping, the nearby Quality Suites San Luis Obispo is a good alternative as an all-suites property with free breakfast and a cantina.

Maui Vista Resort

A budget-friendly condo complex across the street from the beach, Maui Vista Resort has apartment-style accommodations and few amenities. Like most hotels in Kihei, this property is dated and its 287 units could benefit from a few upgrades. Still, units come with full kitchens, living areas, washer/dryers, and furnished outdoor spaces. Each of the property’s three buildings has its own pool, two tennis courts, and outdoor grilling areas, but don’t expect traditional hotel amenities like a spa, fitness center, restaurant, or even daily housekeeping. Nightly rates are usually cheap, but we think there’s better value at nearby Kihei Akahi, which has nicer pools and larger condos.

Best Western Palm Beach Lakes Inn

The two-and-a-half-pearl Best Western Palm Beach Lakes Inn rises above the standard of most budget hotels in the area. The motel layout is dated, but the grounds are well-maintained. Plus the charming pool, relaxed outdoor lounge areas, free breakfast buffet, and decent gym are all nice-to-have. All 135 rooms are similar in size and amenities. They include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Although the adjacent commercial strip lacks much character, it does ensure that guests are within immediate walking distance (or a shuttle ride) to hundreds of shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s not the area’s swankiest lodging but, at this price point, it’s hard to beat. For around the same rates, the nearby Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham West Palm Beach offers similar amenities, plus larger rooms with kitchens.

Hotel Biba

From the street, the two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Biba offers undeniable curb appeal. It’s a lovely property that’s a clear departure from Palm Beach’s chain hotels and ultra-luxurious accommodations. The 44 rooms vary widely in size and amenities, though most feature a pared-down decor with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. The bargain rates and central location in West Palm Beach’s historical El Cid neighborhood attract budget travelers seeking a boutique experience. Breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi are all free. But, the outdoor pool, decor, and grounds could all use a little TLC. For slightly higher rates, Hyatt Place West Palm Beach Downtown features a prime downtown location and a modern look and feel.
