Alder Inn

The lower-middle-range Alder Inn is a solid choice for families and other travelers seeking affordable accommodations in a central South Lake Tahoe location. This 24-room, family-run property enjoys a quiet location amidst towering pines that’s still a short walk to the lake and a brief drive to the Nevada casinos and the gondola at Heavenly Mountain Resort. It’s a two-story, motel-style property with exterior corridors, no elevator, and limited amenities. But it does have a nice heated pool, whirlpool, and outdoor recreation and picnic area with many games. Rooms are clean and individually decorated with contemporary furnishings including Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, robes, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Rates are attractive, but don’t include breakfast (no food is available on site). It’s worth comparing rates with the nearby Postmarc Hotel and Spa Suites.

Motel 6 San Luis Obispo North

This two-pearl motel from the Motel 6 chain is a fairly bare-bones property that doesn’t offer much in terms of features and could use some updates, but it’s a decent enough choice for those on a budget seeking a short stay in San Luis Obispo. There’s an outdoor pool, but not many other amenities. Wi-Fi is charged extra, though parking and morning coffee in the lobby are free. Guest rooms are basic: each is equipped with a flat-screen TV and en-suite bathroom, some rooms add extras like microwaves and mini-fridges. Guests have complained of cleanliness and maintenance issues in the past. As an alternative, check out the Super 8 San Luis Obispo, which offers free Wi-Fi and breakfast, but it doesn’t have a pool.
