Clifton Hotel

The two-and-a-half-pearl Clifton Hotel is average property for one in its range, with a smattering of Victorian architectural details that give it some character. Most of its 26 guest rooms are serviceable, with flat-screen TVs and electric kettles, but the decor is old, and some units needs renovating. Also, some rooms have shared bathrooms. It’s a basic guesthouse with nothing more than a breakfast room — not to discount the rich, free Scottish breakfast. It’s far from central Glasgow, though there’s an underground station nearby and plenty of dining and shopping within walking distance on Byres Road. Travelers who prefer being more central should compare with the Travelodge Glasgow Central.

River Place Inn & Cabins

The motel-style River Place Inn & Cabins offers attractive rates for a hotel located along Pigeon Forge’s main drag, but amenities are limited and rooms get mixed reviews on cleanliness and upkeep. The two-pearl property has 52 units with dated decor, all of which include microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Cabins and condos come with amenities that are a notch up, like full kitchens, whirlpool tubs, and fireplaces. However, smoking is also allowed in some units. There’s no on-site restaurant, and guests are charged for ice, but there’s a heated outdoor pool and a grassy area along the river with picnic tables and barbecues. For a slightly higher rate, Clarion Inn offers spacious and tidy rooms and a free hot breakfast, plus a waterslide by the pool.

Ecopackers

Ecopackers Cusco is a two-pearl backpacker hostel just two blocks from Cusco’s main square. The decor is bright and colorful, featuring both Spanish colonial and Inca elements, and there are a number of convivial social areas. There’s music playing in the courtyard throughout the day, making it a great place to meet like-minded travelers. Weekly events such as barbecues and soccer matches add to the communal spirit, and there’s a spacious TV lounge and colorful bar that also serves full meals. The wide range of rooms includes all-female dorms and private doubles, and all have comfy orthopedic mattresses. Private rooms include flat-screen TVs and en-suite bathrooms. For more peace and privacy, opt for Amaru Hostal, though it will cost more and lacks an on-site restaurant.

Clock Inn Colombo

The value Clock Inn Colombo is a clean, budget hostel with a solid location in Sri Lanka’s capital, set a nine-minute walk from a railway station and a nine-minute drive from Galle Face Beach. There are seven four- and six-person dorms, all bare-bones spaces with lockers and air-conditioning, plus shared bathrooms with showers. Eight private rooms have cheerful decor, flat-screen TVs, wardrobes with safes, and en-suite bathrooms. Freebies are limited to a communal kitchen providing breakfast spreads, tea and coffee all day, Wi-Fi, a lounge area with a TV, and a computer for guest use. This is a good pick for backpackers or budget-minded couples, but it’s worth considering the similarly priced Palm Nest, which has more contemporary rooms, but a less-convenient location.
