Hotel Born

The two-pearl Hotel Born is a converted palace, located in the heart of Palma and just an eight-minute walk from the historic cathedral. Bars, restaurants and nightlife are all nearby as well. Decor is traditional and mostly tasteful, from the Old World lobby to the spacious rooms, which feature flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Preserved historic details also make occasional appearance, adding a bit more atmosphere, but they sometimes just look dated, and features are limited to a free daily buffet breakfast. The charming courtyard is a fine place to start the day when the weather’s warmer, and is a favorite of many previous guests. Prices are reasonable for the area, but travelers wanting a pool might try Hotel Feliz instead, though rates will be higher.

The Capital-Inn

The Capital-Inn is a 30-room budget hostel offering shared dorms and private bedrooms, around a 10-minute drive to downtown Reykjavik. The decor is modern and functional, from the communal kitchen to the rooms. The on-site restaurant and bar is a highlight, with its local Icelandic menu, and the kitchen is spacious and well equipped, with large appliances and dining-hall style seating. There’s a lounge with flat-screen TV and pool table, plus handy extras like a laundry area and a pleasant garden with picnic tables. Keep in mind that breakfast isn’t included in rates. As an alternative, Bus Hostel Reykjavik is another budget-friendly option, though it adds a free light breakfast and has a more central location. However, rates there will be higher.

Cabo Vista Hotel

In contrast to the area’s towering resorts, Cabo Vista Hotel offers modest, budget lodging with all the essentials for travelers who will be out exploring all day. All 23 rooms are bright and modern, and include modern amenities like large internet-connected TVs, free Wi-Fi, private balconies, and kitchenettes. While the property provides a solid home base for exploring central Cabo San Lucas, the lack of any common amenities may dissuade some guests. It’s also less than a 10-minute walk to most of the town’s bars and restaurants. Few hotels in the area can compete on price, however, guests seeking a similar property will find more room to spread out at Los Milagros Hotel which features a small pool and garden-style terrace.

Luna di Marzo

If you’re staying at the lovely two-pearl Luna di Marzo, you’re either mid-hike or escaping the crowds of the coastal villages. The Volastra location high in the hills allows for breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea from the terrace and sun deck. Ten guest rooms are spacious and come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and large bathrooms — a few of them feature a balcony with sweeping views. The breakfast spread with made-to-order scrambled eggs is included in the rates, and there’s a small bar for cocktails. Otherwise, Volastra is home to little more than two restaurants, a hiking path, and a bus stop. For travelers who want to be in the heart of Cinque Terre’s action (and not just looking down at it) check rates at Hotel Ca D’Andrean in the heart of Manarola.
