Central Park Apartments

While features are limited, the budget Central Park Apartments is a good option for those looking for affordable self-catering apartments close to the area’s nightlife. The location in San Antonio Bay is a two-minute walk to San Antonio Beach and the famous Eden and Es Paradis nightclubs. Its 109 apartments are simply decorated and feature small kitchenettes, balconies, and separate living areas with dated sofas and flat-screen TVs — but no air-conditioning. There’s a large rooftop swimming pool with outdoor showers, sun loungers, parasols, and lively music — the boisterous scene here isn’t really appropriate for young kids or elderly travelers. The poolside bar serves a cooked breakfast (not included in room rates), and drinks and light snacks throughout the day. Wi-Fi is available, though it costs a daily fee. Budget travelers could also consider The Red Hotel by Ibiza Feeling, which has air-conditioning and a cafeteria.

Hotel Belvedere

For tourists who want to be within a 10-minute walk to Porto Venere’s Castello Doria and ferry docks, the budget Hotel Belvedere makes a good home base. The hotel has few frills, but its location on a hill overlooking the marina brings gorgeous water views from the lobby, breakfast room, and guest rooms facing the back of the hotel. All 17 rooms are pristinely clean and include flat-screen TVs and refrigerated minibars. Some rooms have furnished balconies and Quadruple Rooms are a good choice for families. The free breakfast includes continental Italian items, Wi-Fi is free, and there are a few free parking spots in front of the hotel. Hotel Paradiso, just up the street, has fresher rooms and a quaint Italian restaurant, but rates are a bit higher.

Safestay London Elephant & Castle

Budget-minded travelers who’ve moved past the bohemian backpacker scene will do well at this two-pearl, 74-room hostel. Safestay London Hostel at Elephant & Castle, south of the Thames, offers high-end hosteling with a glammed-up lobby lounge and bar, comfortable dorm rooms and private rooms, and amenities like a spanking-clean laundry facility, public desktop computers, and free Wi-Fi throughout. But given London’s hearty stock of hip hostels — many with a similar rate, more perks, and a Central London location — travelers may wish to weigh options. Two alternatives worth checking out are SoHostel in Soho and Travel Joy Hostels Chelsea in Pimlico.

Travelodge by Wyndham Outer Banks/Kill Devil Hills

Travelodge Outer Banks/Kill Devil Hills is a solid budget stay, and one of the larger hotels in town. The two-pearl property is a block from the beach, and lacks the direct access and ocean views that many of its competitors offer.  But its 96 affordable guest rooms are tidy and comfortable, and all are well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are basic, with shower/tub combos and hairdryers, but toiletries are skimpy. Facilities are limited to a seasonal outdoor pool and patio with sun loungers, and a breakfast pantry where a free continental breakfast is served. Travelers who prefer staying on the beach should check out the Days Inn Kill Devil Hills Oceanfront–Wilbur.
