Baymont by Wyndham Kitty Hawk Outer Banks

The 98-room Baymont Inn & Suites Kitty Hawk Outer Banks is a budget hotel in a convenient, if uninspiring location right off the highway, though a quick five-minute walk to the beach. Its affordable rooms are clean but a bit dated and showing wear. However, they have all the basics, including coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges plus microwaves. There’s a decent-sized outdoor pool off the parking lot, but no other facilities aside from a breakfast room and small business center. The free breakfast receives excellent reviews for its hot and cold options. It’s worth comparing rates with the Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk, which has an oceanfront setting, indoor and outdoor pools, and a gym.

Best Western Plus Oceanside Palms

Best Western Plus Oceanside Palms/Camp Pendleton is a two-and-a-half-pearl property located near downtown Oceanside, about a six-minute drive from the beach. The hotel completed extensive renovations in August 2016 that included enlarging the 114 guest rooms and adding an outdoor patio space with a fire pit. Rooms feel modern and feature large flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and some kitchenettes. Free breakfast with hot and cold items is served daily, and guests can eat outside on the patio. Other features include a nice outdoor pool and a separate hot tub, plus barbecue grills on the deck. A business center and a large meeting room are available. As an alternative, the Best Western Oceanside Inn has lower rates, but feels dated inside.

Venice Hotel Villa Dori

Isolated in the countryside, the two-and-a-half-pearl Venice Hotel Villa Dori isn’t much of an option unless guests plan on visiting far-flung attractions in the Riviera del Brenta. The property has a worn look, with renovations needed throughout. There’s a kitschy restaurant and bar with an East Indian theme — serving mostly Italian food — along with a small outdoor playground, but not much else. The 31 guest rooms vary widely in decor; not all have the ornate Venetian look as advertised, and some have an Asian-inspired style. All come with AC, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but they lack kettles. Travelers willing to spend a bit more may wish to consider accommodations in central Mestre at Hotel Villa Costanza.
