Villas Coco Resort

The name Villas Coco Resort is a bit misleading for this value spot, though it does have enough on-site to keep guests’ attention and minimum needs met. Everything here is laid-back, from the casual check-in and basic bar to the simple pool area and spacious rooms. Its Punta Sur location toward the southern tip of the island isn’t that convenient and it’s easy to feel the lack of restaurant. Most guests get around via golf cart and there’s free parking. The 16 rooms have sunken bedrooms, balconies, large jetted tub/shower combos that can be tricky to climb into, and basic kitchenettes with no dishes. The free breakfast is light but good, and there are snacks for sale and books to borrow in the lobby. Chac Chi Hotel & Suites is a good alternative option with two pools.

Berkeley City Club

Dating back to 1929, the historic Berkeley City Club is a budget hotel located just one block from UC Berkeley. Rooms are small and spartan, with no coffeemakers, air-conditioning, or even TVs, and guests might find them cramped and dated. Property features are paradoxically swanky and include a fine-dining restaurant as well as beautiful public spaces, including a spectacular indoor pool with mosaic tiling. There’s also a laundry room on the property and a continental breakfast is included in room rates. Overall, it’s an attractive option for those looking for a hotel near the university with loads of personality, though travelers could also consider the mid-range Hotel Durant.
