Posada El Rey Sol

The highlight of this budget motel-style property is its central location in downtown Ensenada that’s close to shops, dining options, and First Street. The hotel is due for a refresh and spaces are dated, but all of its 52 guest rooms have balconies, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Guests should note that some of the rooms have been more recently refurbished and are fresher, while others remain dated. Other perks include an outdoor pool, hot tub, and a sundeck. The property offers a handful of thoughtful freebies like free breakfast at the neighboring restaurant, coffee and tea in the lobby, and welcome drinks. Travelers might want to compare rates with San Nicolas Hotel and Casino, which has a bigger and more attractive pool as well as a casino — though it’s also a bit dated.

7 Springs Inn & Suites

The 7 Springs Inn & Suites is a clean, playful budget property with a retro, mid-century modern feel, outdoor lounge space, and large rooms. The hotel’s outdoor area is a highlight, with a courtyard and landscaped yard featuring a small pool, a big whirlpool, BBQ grills, lounge and dining areas, and even a fire pit. That’s about it for amenities, though: There’s no restaurant, bar, or gym. The hotel’s 52 guest rooms tend to be roomy with funky decor and functional amenities like mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Upgraded suites add full kitchens, plus extras like dining space, living areas, or balconies. The hotel is just a block from Palm Canyon Drive and within a 10-minute walk of downtown restaurants and shopping. Not keen on retro decor? The Alcazar Palm Springs offers a chicer look, but tends to be pricier.

La Quinta Inn & Suites Pigeon Forge

The two-and-a-half-pearl La Quinta Inn & Suites Pigeon Forge offers a wonderful location in central Pigeon Forge that’s a four-minute drive from The Island and a 12-minute drive from Dollywood. The 81 rooms are contemporary and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and microwaves. There’s an indoor pool and hot tub, and a free breakfast buffet that includes waffles. Unfortunately, guests have complained about pet odors and bothersome noise from neighboring rooms with pets. It’s an overall good value, though families could also price the Clarion Inn Dollywood Area which has a pool with a waterslide, movie theater, mini-golf, and evening snacks.

A Plus Hotel & Hostel

With 43 rooms, this two-pearl property is one of the largest hostels in Prague, and is among the few in the city to offer separate, female-only dorm rooms. It draws budget-minded tourists for its convenient location in Prague 1, within walking distance to Florenc tram and metro stations, and Old Town Square. Dated lounge areas, small rooms with hard beds, and communal bathrooms could all use updates. Wi-Fi isn’t available in rooms. However, the free breakfast in the cozy basement bar/restaurant is a nice extra, as are the shared kitchen and living room with a foosball table and dartboard. Like in most hostels frequented by younger guests, common areas can get noisy at night. The nearby Jurys Inn Prague has nicer rooms with private bathrooms, for slightly higher rates.

Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Williamsburg Historic Area, VA

The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Williamsburg Historic Area is just a short five-minute drive from Colonial Williamsburg. This value hotel’s 66 rooms were renovated in 2016 and have microwaves and mini-fridges. A free breakfast buffet with waffles and biscuits and gravy is a great amenity and it’s paired with an indoor pool and hot tub, business center, and free Wi-Fi and parking. The fitness center is a bit of a let-down with only three machines. Travelers may want to consider the Hampton Inn & Suites Williamsburg Historic District as it has a small snack shop on-site and the gym offers free weights and extra cardio machines.
