Hodelpa Caribe Colonial

Hodelpa Caribe Colonial is a contemporary and relaxed boutique hotel in the heart of Santo Domingo’s tourist-friendly Colonial Zone. The two-and-a-half-pearl property has 54 rooms that vary in size, style, and amenities, but all feature free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges or minibars — some even include balconies. The price is right here, and its central location just off the city’s El Conde pedestrian mall is prime, but features are limited. Azul Restaurant — the property’s only social space — serves Dominican fare day and night (including a free breakfast buffet), but there are no other features. Travelers seeking an even more budget-friendly option might consider the Hotel Conde de Penalba instead. It’s just around the corner offers the same amenities, though the package is admittedly more rustic.

Blue Bay Beach Hotel

This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. The quiet, budget Blue Bay Beach Hotel is an inviting Orient Bay property that has a relaxed and laid-back charm. The hotel is within walking distance of the white sands of Orient Bay Beach and the restaurants and shops of Orient Village. All 35 rooms are spacious with a rustic-chic decor, balconies or terraces, and some ocean views. Since rooms feature kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and iPod stations, this is a great choice for families and couples who want to self-cater. The hotel features a private (but small) pool, a few common areas, and some free extras at the front desk like sewing kits and mosquito nets. Those looking for a little more action should consider La Playa Orient Bay; it has DJ sets, free breakfast, and a small spa near the beach.

Antiguo Hotel Europa

Antiguo Hotel Europa is a basic budget property that’s in the Colonial Zone, near Santo Domingo’s most popular tourist restaurants and shops, and the Conde Pedestrian Mall. All 50 rooms include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, while upgraded categories feature mini-fridges and private, city-view balconies. However, the lack of windows in some rooms, limited restaurant service (breakfast only), and steep charges for extra guests are major drawbacks. The nearby Hotel Conde de Penalba offers identical amenities, plus a full-service restaurant/bar adjacent to Parque Colon, with similar nightly rates.
