Brisas Arenal Hotel

Situated outside La Fortuna on the edge of Parque Nacional Volcan Arenal, Brisas Arenal Hotel is a rustic two-and-a-half-pearl spot in a quiet, residential neighborhood. Amid perfectly manicured grounds, the hotel has a tiny plunge pool and serves a free, simple breakfast with local and international options. All 10 cabin-style rooms feature flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, private porches, and air-conditioning; Tropical Suites upgrade to sunken hot tubs with rainforest views. Most visitors to the hotel are seeking a quiet, secluded retreat, however, that does mean there’s nothing within walking distance. The nearby Hotel Arenal Montechiari is pricier, but includes awesome volcano views and a beautiful outdoor pool.

Hotel Del Corso

The calm vibe at Hotel Del Corso is easily one of the highlights at this pleasant, family-run option that’s good value for money. Rooms have either classic or modern decor, and include a range of standard amenities like air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The more modern annex rooms — just two blocks away — have Nespresso machines and slippers to sweeten the deal. A decent breakfast buffet is served on the cozy rooftop terrace, and includes pastries, fresh fruit, and hot options. However, it’s not included with standard rates. Guests are also free to use the terrace for evening drinks, but there’s no formal bar service. For a similar option where breakfast is included, try Hotel Piazza di Spagna — though it’s slightly less well-maintained.

Dream Beach Huts

Dream Beach Huts is a small value hotel overlooking Dream Beach in the southern part of Lembongan island. The 28 huts here feature traditional thatched roofs and have dark-wood interiors that keep them cool, plus all have air-conditioning, terraces, and lovely outdoor bathrooms. However, in-room amenities are limited, with no hot water or TVs, much less coffee- and tea-making facilities or mini-fridges. Hotel facilities include a restaurant serving free buffet breakfast and a wide range of Indonesian and Western dishes that get mixed reviews from guests, a small gift shop, and a lovely, two-tiered infinity pool with fountain features. Just note that the property can get crowded, particularly by the pool, as day visitors are allowed to come use the facilities for a fee. For something quieter, consider Bay Shore Huts, which offers more extensive amenities.

Orlando Continental Plaza Hotel

Orlando Continental Plaza Hotel is a run-down two-pearl motel just off the 4 freeway, a five-minute drive from the Universal Studios theme parks. The 192 rooms here are dark and about as basic as they come, with worn furnishings and old carpets, but the beds and pillows are comfortable. Amenities include a swimming pool that’s heated all year round, a free shuttle to area parks, coin-operated laundry facilities, a microwave for guest use, and a small breakfast cafe serving a variety of microwavable items (think frozen corn dogs) along with coffee and tea. The only Wi-Fi available is in the lobby. There are plenty of better budget options in the area, such as the Baymont Inn & Suites Orlando Universal Blvd, which has nicer rooms and free Wi-Fi throughout.

Sunset Motel

The two-pearl Sunset Motel offers comfortable accommodations within a short drive of downtown Santa Barbara. The older, motel-style property has 17 well-equipped guest rooms with pleasant decor. All units contain large flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Bathrooms have attractive tiling that resembles stone, spacious, black granite vanities, and shower/tub combos, and suites add whirlpool tubs. Amenities are limited and there’s no elevator, but freebies include Wi-Fi, a continental breakfast, and on-parking, although the lot can fill to capacity when the motel is fully booked. Travelers looking for a stay with a pool that’s closer to downtown can check out Orange Tree Inn, with rates that are only slightly higher.

Germaican-Hostel

Budget travelers will find excellent accommodations at Germaican Hostel, a two-pearl property located high in the hills above Port Antonio. The hostel’s private rooms and shared dormitories are kept spotlessly clean, and perks include free daily breakfast and excellent Wi-Fi. Since the property isn’t near the beach or in town, the hostel’s owner offers free rides up and down the hill a few times per day. The majority of Germaican Hostel’s guests are German, so non-German speakers may feel out of place. Additionally, anyone who doesn’t smoke weed or doesn’t like the smell of weed should definitely steer clear, as someone is always smoking somewhere around the property. Travelers looking for a more family-friendly atmosphere may prefer Hotel Jamaican Colors, which is pricier but has a similar laid-back atmosphere and more on-site amenities.
