Hotel Arenal Montechiari

Set in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, Hotel Arenal Montechiari offers quaint, garden-style budget lodging just a 10-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and tour operators on La Fortuna’s tourist-friendly strip. The 21 rustic, cabin-style rooms all include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges, plus private porches with volcano views. A lovely outdoor pool and open-air restaurant help set it apart from dozens of similar hotels in the area. However, the restaurant hours are limited to non-existent in low season, and Wi-Fi is spotty away from the lobby. Brisas Arenal Hotel lacks a decent pool but offers more seclusion and rooms, with a bit more sophistication, for less money.

Arenal Green Hotel

On a quiet street 30 minutes from Arenal Volcano, Arenal Green Hotel delivers exactly what it promises — clean, rustic, rainforest-inspired lodging with few frills. The nine freestanding Bungalows come with private terraces, mini-fridges, and wet bars, while a single Family Bungalow upgrades to a full kitchen and a large, three-bedroom layout. The restaurant serves a free hot breakfast daily and a traditional Costa Rican lunches and dinners are available during peak season. There’s nothing walkable in the vicinity, but this is a pleasant place to relax for a few days, especially when the short, five-minute drive to La Fortuna, and the reasonable rates, are considered. Travelers who’d like better volcano views and a sparkling pool might consider Hotel Arenal Montechiari instead, though it’s a bit pricier.

Hotel Residency Fort

The two-and-a-half-pearl Residency Hotel offers modern accommodations with solid value in central Mumbai. The property is within walking distance of dining, shopping, and sights, including Victoria Terminus. Common areas have high-quality traditional decor, and while some of the 40 guest rooms are small, they’re streamlined and tidy, and well-equipped with AC, flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a free hot breakfast that receives high marks from guests, and there’s also an all-day cafe, 24-hour room service, and a lobby lounge with a foot massage chair. Travelers looking for rooms with decor that’s a step up might want to consider nearby Abode Bombay.

4Dreams Hotel

The 4Dreams Hotel is a budget property with a fantastic location in the pedestrian center of Puerto de la Cruz, a short walk from restaurants, bars, and attractions. However, this property is dated throughout and past guests have complained of bed bugs, noise, maintenance issues, and odors. The 67 rooms have flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges, and some have balconies. There’s a lovely roof terrace with a small (but cold) pool and excellent views over Puerto. Buffet breakfast is available for a small fee and Wi-Fi is free, but patchy in rooms. It could be worth comparing rates with Hotel Marte, where rooms are dated but reliably clean and there’s a full restaurant and bar.

Hotel Mango

Hotel Mango is a simple budget property in Boca Chica — one of the island’s most famous and infamous seaside towns. The beach is less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Each of the 33 rooms is clean, though small and dated, with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges. There’s enough on-site to keep most guests happy, including a small pool, a tiny workout area, and a lively 24-hour restaurant and bar that’s equally as popular with guests and locals. Although it’s more expensive, Hotel Garant offers the same amenities with a bit more polish and a better location near the beach.
