Doctors Cave Beach Hotel

Named after Montego Bay’s most famous beach, Doctors Cave Beach Hotel is a budget-friendly 90-room property located on the city’s “hip strip.” Located across the street from its namesake, the hotel is within walking distance of shops, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. It’s also a convenient 10-minute drive from the airport. The hotel has a small pool and hot tub and offers free breakfast and Wi-Fi, but there’s no full-service restaurant and decor is incredibly dated throughout. It’s worth comparing rates at the nearby Gloucestershire Hotel, but travelers looking for a resort-like atmosphere might prefer the Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay.

Railay Phutawan Resort

Railay Phutawan Resort is a budget-friendly property located in the jungle-shrouded hills of Railay, about a 10-minute walk from the east and west beaches. The resort offers beautiful views of the immense limestone cliffs (look closely for tiny rock climbers) and surrounding wilderness from its infinity pool, pool bar, restaurant, several outdoor relaxation areas, and many of its rooms. Of Phutawan’s 40 rooms and cottages, about eight have direct views of the cliff and sea from private balconies. Not all rooms have this outstanding perk, but all do have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free coffee/tea and bottled water. In all, this is one of the best values (and views) in Railay. For a private bungalow at a lower price point, look into Railay Garden View Resort; just know that that property lacks a pool, full restaurant, or air-conditioning.

Hotel Catalina

The two-pearl Hotel Catalina sits on a fairly quiet slope within easy walking distance from most of Avalon’s main streets and sites. The hotel is an early 1900s building decked out in charming, traditional Victorian decor everywhere from its lobby to its 32 rooms — there’s no shortage of character. Common verandas on each floor also come with lovely beach views. However, like most budget hotels, amenities are simple. Rooms and bathrooms are on the small side, and though they have mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs, none have air-conditioning and the carpets are dated. An outdoor courtyard and hot tub are pleasant. Limited freebies include Wi-Fi throughout and a simple breakfast spread. For just slightly higher rates, Hotel Villa Portofino has more updated rooms, a full restaurant, and access to massage services.
