Sunrise Club

The Sunrise Club is a 14-room budget hotel located across the street from the beach in downtown Negril. Its brightly colored rooms have air-conditioning and private bathrooms, but decor is somewhat dated and furnishings are basic. The Sunrise Club’s Italian owner, Luca, brings a little slice of Italy to Negril with his on-site restaurant, which serves Italian cuisine, brick-oven pizza, and excellent espresso. Because the owner is Italian, the majority of guests at Sunrise Club are also Italian — though there are usually a smattering of Americans as well. In our opinion, Sunrise Club is one of the best budget options around, but some travelers think the on-site dining is too expensive and dislike that the hotel Wi-Fi only works around the bar. The comparably priced Seastar Inn is an alternative with a pool, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi, but it’s located in Negril’s West End Cliffs neighborhood, farther from the beach.

Casa Zen Guest House & Yoga Center

Casa Zen Guest House and Yoga Center is a two-and-a-half-pearl guest house near gorgeous Santa Teresa Beach, a well-known surf spot. While the hotel’s name might conjure chic style, this is really a hostel and its 12 rooms are a mix of dorms, private rooms with shared bathrooms, and a big apartment with a full kitchen. Expect African or Mayan masks, Asian-themed tapestry comforters, and ceiling fans, as none of the rooms are air-conditioned. There’s a beautiful open-air yoga studio and multiple daily classes are offered (for a fee). Freebies include simple breakfasts and Wi-Fi. Bikes, surfboards, and boogie boards are also available to rent. For a yoga-friendly option with a tasty restaurant, gorgeous pool, and ocean-view yoga studio, it’s worth pricing out Funky Monkey Lodge instead.

Hotel Pleasant Haveli

Hotel Pleasant Haveli is a two-story budget guesthouse located right in the heart of Jaisalmer’s touristy center, less than 10 minutes on foot from the Rajashtani city’s namesake fort. The nine rooms here have a sort of industrial-desert vibe, with exposed brick or sandstone walls paired with bright, colorful linens. All have flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning. Features here are limited, though there is a rooftop restaurant that’s open for all three meals with great views, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The hotel also provides free pick-ups from the train and bus stations, likely to prevent touts from poaching freshly arrived travelers. Those shopping around may want to also consider staying at the Hotel Royal Haveli, which has a similar vibe and room rates.

Hotel Santa Teresa

Hotel Playa Carmen is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel a short walk from Playa Carmen Beach, one of the many gorgeous Santa Teresa beaches. The hotel recently changed ownership and is slated for a big overhaul. During our winter 2017 visit, its 23 available air-conditioned rooms were a mix of Suites, Standard, and Deluxe Rooms with flat-screen TVs, hardwood armchairs, and private balconies. The Standard Rooms could use some TLC, as we spotted worn furniture. There’s also a small pool, and hotel freebies are limited to parking and Wi-Fi. For a more tropical stay with a lush grounds, a pool, a yoga studio, and a short walk to the beach, it’s worth pricing out Otro Lado Lodge and Restaurant.

Motel Capri

Guests shouldn’t expect much from this one-and-a-half pearl, 46-room motel. However, while its rather run-down exteriors and outdated reception area aren’t appealing, rooms are surprisingly comfortable, with updated furniture and conveniences that include microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. What the property lacks in amenities (the free breakfast offerings are scant, and there’s no pool or laundry facility) it somewhat makes up for with its location, as it stands on a quiet street in the Marina District, and several tourist attractions easily accessible on foot or by public transport. Parking is free, which is almost unheard of in San Francisco. For budgets with some leeway, the Nob Hill Hotel is closer to Union Square and Chinatown, and has charming Victorian decor and a full restaurant.

Fisherman’s Point Resort

The phrase “you get what you pay for” rings true at Fisherman’s Point Resort, a shabby value property across from the cruise port in Ocho Rios. Though the hotel is within walking distance of the cruise ship pier, and tons of shops and restaurants, it has a slightly seedy vibe, with run-down rooms and an eerily quiet atmosphere. While there’s no beach, the hotel does have a mid-size pool. The property’s one redeeming quality is the delicious on-site Indian restaurant, though rooms located above it tend to have a lingering curry smell. Budget travelers will find nicer accommodations at the Pineapple Court Hotel, but it’s far from downtown and the cruise ship pier. Travelers looking for something a bit nicer might prefer Hibiscus Lodge Hotel.

The Lis

The Lis Hotel is an independent, budget-level property located in the shabbier outskirts of the small resort of Cala Major. While showing signs of renovation throughout, most of the 18 apartments have dated decor and look shabby, and lack basics such as air-conditioning. However, all come with kitchenettes that have fridges, sinks, cooktops, and kettles, plus units have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. A small pool area has comfy loungers but it’s prone to shade, though there’s a rooftop panoramic terrace with hot tub that guests rave about. Breakfast and drinks are also great value, and rates can be a bargain — especially for groups. An even cheaper option nearby, however, is La Mimosa Guesthouse, which is better for couples and single travelers though farther from the beach.
