Hotel Casa San Pancho

A family-run property with unique decor, a delicious free breakfast, and a convenient location, Hotel Casa San Pancho is the quintessential boutique hotel. With 10 individually decorated rooms and an intimate, adults-only atmosphere, it can feel more like a private home than a budget hotel. The family’s personal collection of Balinese statues, tapestries, and photographs is displayed across the hotel, which imbues the property with a serious Asian aesthetic. There’s a tiny pool surrounded by lush gardens, but otherwise the property doesn’t offer much to do on-site. Luckily, San Pancho’s shops, bars, restaurants, and beach are all within a 10-minute walk. It’s worth comparing rates at Hotel Cielo Rojo, a nearby boutique that has an on-site restaurant but lacks a pool.

The Beach Waikiki Boutique Hostel

The Beach Waikiki Boutique Hostel is a two-pearl budget property that’s two blocks from Waikiki’s gorgeous Kuhio Beach. The 37 air-conditioned rooms are a mix of dorms, semi-private, and private rooms with king, queen, and twin beds. All units also include en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, and refrigerators. The style isn’t exactly as boutique as the hotel’s name claims, but there’s a pleasantly laid-back vibe here. The fabulous rooftop deck has an open-air kitchen and free pizza on Fridays. Free continental breakfasts and excursions are also included with all stays (though tips for the driver are strongly encouraged). Other amenities include bicycle and surf rentals, parking, and free Wi-Fi. Alternatively, the bustling Waikiki Beachside Hostel has cheaper rates plus free surfboards, though it’s a bit more tired.

Las Casitas

On paper, the two-pearl Las Casitas sounds like a charming inn with authentic Mexican design, seven unique rooms, a welcoming proprietor, and a tiny pool. But in reality, the property is far too rustic for many travelers, with dingy, deteriorating rooms that smell of mold and have dust-covered surfaces. For those who don’t mind these pitfalls, Las Casitas provides spacious rooms with full kitchens, though their unique floor plans don’t allow for much privacy. The property is located on a residential street, about a 10-minute walk from downtown Guayabitos. For slightly pricier, though still budget-friendly nightly rates, Las Cabinas del Capitan is in the center of town, and offers beachfront accommodations with a larger pool and an on-site restaurant.
