Amsterdam Teleport Hotel

This two-and-a-half-pearl, 143-room hotel is located on the outskirts of Amsterdam, a five-minute walk from Slotedijk Railway Station. Most attractions aren’t within walking distance, but the city center can be reached in around 30 minutes by train or bike. The hotel is geared toward younger travelers, with quirky decor and a social, almost hostel-like atmosphere. Guest rooms vary in size, and all include flat-screen TVs, safes, and small kitchenettes with microwaves, fridges, and tea/coffee facilities — though they lack air-conditioning, and some bathrooms aren’t en-suite. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Other features include a games room, fitness center, bike tours, and 24-hour homemade pizzas. Travelers seeking a centrally located alternative with a party atmosphere should consider St. Christopher’s at Winston Hotel instead, which adds a free breakfast.

Kabul Hostel

Two-pearl Kabul Hostel is a self-labelled party hostel which sits on Placa Reial — one of the top spots for nightlife in the city — and just steps from lively Las Ramblas. There’s a casual, pub-like style throughout the common spaces, which are outfitted with games, vending machines, and internet stations, plus a bar on the rooftop terrace. The 24 air-conditioned dorms are simple, but include welcome touches like curtained bunks and outlets inside the lockers. Dorms come in a range of configurations, such as twin and female-only dorms, and the largest has 22 bunks. This is a good value for its central location, but travelers wanting a quieter vibe in a similar area might prefer Pension Segre, which has some en-suite rooms, though rates are higher.

The Monarch in Mariposa

Monarch in Mariposa is a two-pearl hotel in central Mariposa, a short stroll from restaurants, shops, and the bus to Yosemite. The hotel offers a seasonal outdoor pool and accommodations are affordable for the area, but the overall quality here is subpar. Guest rooms and public spaces are dated well overdue for renovation, and the free continental breakfast gets mediocre reviews for taste and lack of variety. Amenities in the 47 spacious guest rooms are a highlight, as all come with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel’s nearby sister property Best Western Plus Yosemite Way Station Motel is a bit more expensive, but its guest rooms are in better condition, and it also offers hot items for breakfast.
