Lagos Youth Hostel

The 19-room Lagos Youth Hostel is a budget property with a prime location in the center of Lagos, within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shops, and the beach. Rooms are available as dorms with two sets of bunk beds, or private rooms with two twin beds (some with private bathrooms). Others share bathrooms. The style is no frills, but rooms include sheets, towels, and blankets, as well as lockers. A continental breakfast and Wi-Fi are both free. Common areas include a central patio and a living area with a TV and billiards table. There’s also a shared kitchen. It’s hard to beat the rates and location here, but the Algarve Surf Hostel – Lagos has more style and a pool, but its rates are higher, too.

Pearl Palace Heritage – The Boutique Guesthouse

Pearl Palace Heritage is a small budget boutique guest house located just down the road from the Jaipur Railway Station. Each of the 10 rooms here is individually decorated, with ornate (and some might say over-the-top), traditionally inspired decor and modern amenities including flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and in-room personal computers with internet connectivity. However, there isn’t much in terms of facilities beyond free Wi-Fi.  The hotel doesn’t even have a restaurant, though room service is available from the sister property — Hotel Pearl Palace — which may be a better option for those looking for something with a bit more of a social scene. Fun fact, the “Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was partially shot here.

Hotel Marchionni

Hotel Marchionni was built in the 1920s and today it still reflects much of its original Art Deco style over four stories and 40 guest rooms accessible via a beautiful glass cage elevator. The location is another strong point; Marchionni is one block from the beach and one block from the city’s enormous park. The rooms mimic the public area’s Art Deco style, but the look may be too vintage for some tastes. Free continental breakfast is included in all rates, and there’s a lobby bar for cocktails and wines. The hotel partners with a nearby beach club, allowing discounts for use of their pool and sun loungers. For an alternative with a pool and more modern rooms, check out Sina Astor Hotel — but note that rates are higher.

Jacobs Inn Hostel

Jacobs Inn Hostel is a friendly 71-room budget property with clean rooms and boldly colored 2016-renovated interiors. The location north of the River Liffey can feel a little dodgy at times, and it’s a 15- to 20-minute walk from the center. However, the hostel is just a couple minutes’ walk from Connolly Station and a Luas stop. Private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and dorms with en-suite or shared bathrooms are available. All beds have privacy curtains, sockets, and lights, as well as under-bed lockers. The hostel has a large, modern communal kitchen, coffee bar, and serves free continental breakfast daily. A games room, spacious lobby, and rooftop terrace offer plenty of space for hanging out and there’s free Wi-Fi throughout. Nearby Issacs Hostel is clean and trendy and has lower rates, but rooms are more bare-bones.
