Motel One Amsterdam

The two-and-a-half-pearl Motel One Amsterdam offers low-frills rooms in stylish 2015-built interiors. Near RAI convention center, its business district location is ideal for the corporate traveler and the city center can be reached in 15 minutes by car. Upbeat spaces are outfitted with the chain’s bright palettes and funky upholstering, including the 24-hour One Lounge offering a buffet breakfast and array of gin. Unfortunately, there are almost no other amenities, as the hotel lacks wellness and business facilities, and a full restaurant. The 320 modern rooms are bright, equipped with flat-screen TVs and layouts that make the most of the limited space, but they don’t have fridges, safes, or kettles. It’s worth considering the Ramada Apollo Hotel, which is next to the Rembrandtpark and has more on-site features.

Casa Colonial 1715

Casa Colonial 1715 offers cozy, two-pearl lodgings in the center of Old Havana, just two blocks from the tourist-friendly Calle Obispo pedestrian mall. The neighborhood is rough around the edges, but as authentic as it gets for life in modern Havana. Each of the four rooms is clean and colorful, but basic, with only the essentials: ceiling fans, air-conditioning, small wall safes, and private bathrooms. The limited list of amenities is typical of the city’s many casa particulares (private home stays), including a small, common-use kitchen, free hot breakfast, a dining area, and a TV lounge. For the same rates, Casa Castellon offers similar amenities in a quieter location.

Ancora Beach Resort

Located on a bustling side street that leads down to one of Baga’s most famous attractions — Tito’s Nightclub — this budget hotel is good for those in search of nothing more than a cheap place to crash. It’s popular with domestic tourists on tight budgets, and gets a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends. Rooms are by and large grubby, though some of the higher-category units feel a bit fresher thanks to colorful throw cushions and wood-panel floors. Amenities include free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour bar and restaurant with room service. While it’s a good spot for those who want to be within stumbling distance of Baga’s bars and clubs, plenty of better budget options exist in the area, such as Santiago Beach Resort, housed in an old Goan home.

Landmark Residence

The Landmark Residence is a value hotel with 49 rooms arranged over 13 floors in the heart of Sao Paulo. The hotel’s best feature is undoubtedly its location in the Jardins District, just two blocks from bustling Paulista Avenue. While the decor in some of the guest rooms has a ’90s vibe, the hotel has elements that appeal to value-minded families or business travelers on longer stays. For example, all rooms include a small kitchenette, suites offer spacious living rooms, there’s a squash court, European restaurant, and a nice outdoor pool area. Overall, the Landmark Residence might work for those in need of a kitchen or a larger space while on a budget, but for most travelers to Jardins, check out the nearby Mercure São Paulo Jardins Hotel — but rates are slightly higher.
