ClinkNOORD

The 2015-opened ClinkNOORD is a friendly, lively hostel offering budget accommodation in Amsterdam’s Noord docklands. Ferries are required for downtown, but they’re free, run 24/7, and located just a six-minute walk from the property. Welcoming common areas are outfitted in bright, eclectic decor and lounge, library, and terraces provide space for mingling. A self-catering kitchen accompanies a nice dining room, or a cafe serves meals. ZinkBAR hosts live DJ sets and quiz nights. The 213 rooms are basic but clean, and bunk-bed stocked dorms have reading lights, USB ports, and free Wi-Fi. Private rooms with en-suite showers are also available. If ferries sound inconvenient, check out the downtown Flying Pig.

Selina Cancun

This modest 46-room hotel in downtown Cancun is a good pick for budget travelers looking to be close to the ADO bus station, which is just one block away. Though the hotel is ultra simple, interiors are kept clean and air-conditioned guest rooms come equipped with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have balconies. Tiny bathrooms could use an update. A handful of features adds value, including an outdoor pool and a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch (for an added fee). There are plenty of dining options and shopping in the area, but travelers seeking some beach time will have to drive or take a 20-minute bus ride. For an alternative, check out the budget Mezcal Hostel, which offers free breakfast and free poolside dinner, but lacks in-room Wi-Fi.

CityHub Amsterdam

The two-and-a-half-pearl CityHub is a high-tech concept hostel with 50 private beds (called Hubs) stacked atop each other in a shared, futuristic space. Hubs are essentially closet-sized pods with double beds, a tiny patch of standing room, and not much else, and all units have shared bathrooms. App-controlled, customizable mood lighting and streaming music is a favorite perk among guests, but technophobes need not apply. Along with the necessary apps, there’s free Wi-Fi in the building and throughout the city, arranged through a local carrier. There’s also a swank self-serve bar, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a more traditional hostel experience and free breakfast, check out the private rooms at the Flying Pig Uptown.
