Citiez Hotel Amsterdam

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam is budget hotel with lively decor and a hostel-like atmosphere located in a residential neighborhood that’s far from the city center. The retail mall it’s attached to might be one of the most interesting things about the bland area. The property’s 71 guest rooms are modern but tiny — with bathrooms only a few steps from beds — and some are windowless. Standard amenities include AC, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but units lack kettles and wardrobes or shelves to stow clothing. Upgraded units have mini-fridges and Nespresso machines. The lobby doubles as a 24-hour cafe frequented by locals that serves Dutch products and organic coffee, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a stay closer to Amsterdam’s nightlife should look into the hip and well-priced Volkshotel.

Phuphaya Seaview Resort

The 30-room Phuphaya Seaview Resort is a good fit for budget travelers and partygoers. For everyone else, it’s most likely a pass. Located on the northeast corner of Lo Dalum Bay, the rustic property offers gorgeous views of the turquoise water surrounded by mountains. These views are especially clear from the hotel’s infinity pool and adjoining bar/restaurant. But that’s where Phuphaya’s positives end. Rooms range from fan-only units without hot water to air-conditioned bungalows with flat-screen TVs, hot water, and sea views. Guests who upgrade can be more satisfied with their experience, but past visitors are often still unhappy about hard beds, loud late-night noise from nearby bars, and the steep uphill climb from town. Cleanliness isn’t a strong suit either; the infinity pool, one of the hotel’s best assets, doesn’t get regular maintenance. Phi Phi Banyan Villa is a more reliable pick.

Hotel Neptuno-Triton

Hotel Neptuno-Triton is a budget property located in the business district, about a 20-minute drive from the center of Havana. Many of the 266 rooms here have balconies with sweeping ocean views, but there are some cleanliness and maintenance issues both in rooms and in common areas. Facilities include a huge outdoor swimming pool, an indoor/outdoor bar, buffet and a la carte dining options, free Wi-Fi in the lobby, and an internet cafe, but food often receives poor reviews. Although the hotel sits on the beach, the shoreline is rather rocky. For a true upscale property located in central Havana, consider Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Hotel Belmar

Travelers on a tight budget will find excellent accommodations at Hotel Belmar, a value property within a 10-minute walk of downtown Puerto Vallarta. Some of the hotel’s 30 private rooms can accommodate up to eight people — all have private bathrooms and most have large outdoor balconies. Furniture is simple, amenities are few, and bathrooms are dreadfully tiny, but rooms are clean, and feature lots of colorful, bold artwork. Hotel Belmar offers free Wi-Fi and free breakfast, though the measly breakfast isn’t worth waking up for. Though the hotel doesn’t have any features like a pool, spa, or restaurant, there are tons of local shops and eateries in the immediate neighborhood, and the Malecon is an easy 10-minute walk. Travelers looking for something a bit nicer should check out Garlands del Rio across the street, which has better rooms and more amenities for slightly pricier, but still affordable, nightly rates.

Hotel Herculaneum

The two-pearl Hotel Herculaneum is a stylish budget-friendly boutique hotel ideally located across the road from the Ercolano Ruins. Guests mostly come here to explore the historical excavations, or to use it as a central point for visiting nearby villages like Pompeii, Naples, and Sorrento. The 19 guest rooms are modern with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi — some rooms have views of the ruins across the road. Features are mostly limited to a free hot buffet breakfast, with no full on-site restaurant or bar available. The reception staff are able to assist with tourist information as well as local tour bookings. As an alternative, guests can also consider Andris Hotel which is located in the Vesuvio National Park and includes a restaurant and swimming pool for slightly higher rates.
