Silver Seas Resort Hotel

Silver Seas Resort Hotel is a budget oceanfront property with a tranquil atmosphere in Ocho Rios’s bustling commercial heart. It’s a faded gem that’s seen better days: the grounds are tired and the sandy waterfront is actually a crumbling breaker wall where sand and cement seem to mix. The hotel’s 30 simple rooms have tile floors, two double beds, TVs with cable, and private balconies or patios with fabulous ocean views. There are some plusses. The restaurant also has gorgeous views and serves Jamaican and international cuisine to good reviews. The hotel bar overlooks the big freshwater pool and is surrounded by lounge chairs. For an oceanfront stay with a beautiful beach, free kayaks, and a tasty Jamaican/Greek restaurant, Kaz Kreol Beach Lodge has similar rates.

Edge Hotel

The Edge Hotel is a small and stylish two-and-a-half pearl property that opened in 2016 in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Located a few minutes’ walk from Columbia University Medical Center and three subway lines, the hotel is convenient for hospital visitors as well as tourists who want to be close to The Cloisters and don’t mind taking a subway ride to the sights. The 54 compact and modern rooms provide 42-inch flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and some Manhattan views. However, walls are thin. Amenities include free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour grab-and-go kiosk, and a small, but modern, fitness center. The lobby is decorated with local artwork. Travelers wanting to be closer to Midtown could also try the Morningside Inn, a bare-bones property on the Upper West Side that has lower rates.

Splash Inn Nuevo Vallarta

Splash Inn Nuevo Vallarta is a budget-friendly hotel best known for its on-site waterpark. Patronized by guests and locals alike, the waterpark is a popular area attraction, with dozens of slides, a kiddie pool, and sea animal shows featuring dolphins and sea lions. The hotel itself is basic, with sparsely furnished rooms and underwhelming decor. Amenities include a small pool and a tiny fitness center, plus an on-site restaurant with unreliable hours. Guests have access to free Wi-Fi in the lobby, but the connection can be spotty. In our opinion, travelers are better off staying at a nearby hotel and visiting the waterpark for a day. Hotel Las Palomas Nuevo Vallarta is a budget-friendly pick with a bit more charm, plus it has better Wi-Fi and a cute breakfast restaurant.

Sunotel Junior

The two-and-a-half-pearl Sunotel Junior offers solid accommodations in hip L’Antiga Esquerra de L’Eixample, but it isn’t ideal for tourists here to see major sights. Its 34 guest rooms have basic and slightly dated decor, but they’re comfortable and well-maintained. All units have AC, flat-screen TVs, wide desks, roomy wardrobes, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no kettles or safes. Guests have free access to features including a rooftop pool, restaurant, and bar located at the hotel’s sister property, a short walk away through a connecting underground tunnel. Travelers looking for a more upscale stay can check out U232 Hotel, which has a fitness center but no pool.
