Hôtel Le Chamonix

The two-pearl Hotel Le Chamonix’s simple hostel-style setup and central location against the gorgeous backdrop of Mont Blanc attracts mostly backpackers and skiers looking for a convenient and affordable option in the resort village. The 31 rustic rooms are small and simple, but they offer comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, and beautiful mountain views — some have balconies. Aside from a buffet breakfast and ski equipment storage, there aren’t many amenities here. The property’s appeal lies more in its proximity to the ski lifts, train station, and village restaurants, all of which are under 10 minutes away on foot. The Mercure Chamonix Les Bossons is further from the village center, but has a full restaurant, a stylish lounge, and an indoor pool.

The Wexford Hotel

The Wexford Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl property with gorgeous ocean views that’s located on the quieter end of Montego Bay’s Hip Strip. Its 80 air-conditioned rooms have king or double beds, shelf stereo systems, flat-screen TVs, and private balconies (some with ocean views), though most are tired and worn. Some rooms include kitchenettes and the Executive Suites have huge bathrooms with whirlpool tubs, but Deluxe Rooms lack much in the way of extras. The freshwater pool is has a sandy deck and the restaurant gets decent reviews. Breakfast is included. Other hotel freebies include free admission to a nearby theme park, round-trip airport transfers, and a welcome cocktail. For a hotel with ocean views, an art-filled interior, a pool, and restaurant, it’s worth checking out Altamont West Hotel instead.

Sandbar Beachfront Hostel & Restaurant

With rock bottom rates, a lively atmosphere, and an excellent beachfront location in San Pedro, Sandbar Beachfront Hostel & Restaurant is an excellent pick for backpackers and budget travelers. Sandbar has two 12-person mixed dormitories and several private rooms that accommodate up to three people. Private rooms have their own private bathrooms and a shared balcony, while dorms have shared single-sex bathrooms. All units have air-conditioning and locked storage compartments. Sandbar’s on-site bar and restaurant is a popular spot, where guests and other young San Pedro travelers like to hang out — though some guests complain that the bar gets a little too rowdy at night. Sandbar has a large pier with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and ocean access, and it’s within walking distance of all San Pedro has to offer. It’s worth checking rates at Pedro’s Hotel, which has a similar atmosphere and comparable amenities, but it’s father from town and isn’t on the beach.

Suites Corazon

Next to Playa del Carmen’s popular 5th Avenue and a short walk from the city’s beaches, is the budget-friendly Suites Corazon. The hotel’s 14 studio-style rooms are clean and spacious with kitchenettes and balconies. With few on-site amenities, the self-catering rooms and location are the hotel’s main selling point. Sure, there’s a small rooftop pool, but the basic breakfast is offered off-site for a fee and there’s no gym (or any other major amenity). That’s okay for most guests, who just want a self-sufficient suite with a walkable location in the center of Playa del Carmen’s shopping and nightlife center. For a similar apartment-style hotel, check out the nearby Anah Suites, which provides a small spa, free parking, gym, and rooftop pool.

Apartamentos Soldoiro

Apartmentos Soldoiro is a budget property located a few minutes’ walk uphill from the white-sand Algarve beach. The 90 studio and apartment-style rooms were last refurbished in 2010 and are pretty traditional and low on frills, though kept clean. Standard amenities include kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, plus all but one have a furnished balcony or terrace. Unfortunately, common areas badly need a refurbishment. Given the cheap nightly rate, inexpensive beer from the two bars on-site, and proximity to local nightlife, it’s a popular pick with young groups of friends. As such, it can get a bit noisy at night. Beyond the bars and small outdoor pool, there’s not a lot on offer here. Nearby, the all-inclusive Praia da Oura is still inexpensive but offers a bit more, including a huge swimming pool.
