B&B Hotel Pisa

B&B Hotel Pisa is a chain budget spot popular with tour groups and tourists who want fast access to the nearby Pisa International Airport and Central Station. The 101 simple rooms are clean and come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and spacious bathrooms. Features are minimal — there’s a hot breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a small shop that sells cold drinks and snacks. The immediate location is mostly industrial, and it’s about a 15-minute drive to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For something sleeker near the train station, NH Pisa Hotel is a good bet.

The Downtown Hotel

The Downtown Hotel is an older, two-pearl property located in downtown Soufriere. The hotel’s 18 guest rooms are past their prime, offering worn-out decor and minimal amenities. Units do have nice views of the coast or surrounding town, but balconies are unfurnished. All come with AC, flat-screen TVs, microwaves, kettles, and fridges. Aside from free Wi-Fi, this hotel lacks any amenities, making rock-bottom rates its most appealing feature. While the hotel’s central location is convenient for exploring the attractions of south St. Lucia, the neighborhood is a tad seamy. Guests with flexibility in their budget should try Hummingbird Beach Resort instead — the higher rates are well worth it.

Hotel Filù

Fresh from its 2015 opening, the two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Filu is a stylish bed-and-breakfast. Outside the tourist hub, but well-placed in the Cannaregio district, its canal-side location is both beautiful and practical. A water taxi dock is right by the hotel, and links directly to both San Marco Square and the airport. The 13 rooms are attractively outfitted in large photos and elegant suedes, and modern amenities include flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and mini-fridges. Canal views in some are scenic, but others face an alley. Aside from a continental buffet breakfast, there are no real amenities. For a classy stay in an expensive city, it’s a solid pick. Compare rates with Hotel Ca Dogaressa, which has classic Venetian decor and a rooftop terrace.

Hotel Vila Recife

Hotel Vila Recife is a two-pearl hotel within walking distance to both Albufeira’s lively Old Town Strip and Fisherman’s Beach. Plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs are within an easy walk, though the location means guests have to deal with some noise. The 92 guest rooms are simply decorated and come with basic amenities like air-conditioning and a mini-fridge, though they lack in-room Wi-Fi and only have twin bed configurations. On-site features are limited to a breakfast room, small bar, and outdoor swimming pool. The buffet breakfast is not included in all rates and doesn’t receive great reviews. Travelers looking for a beachfront location should consider Alfamar Beach & Sport Resort, which has a lot more features like a spa and sports facilities.

Vallarta Sun Suites & Hotel

Rock-bottom rates and a fabulous location are some of the few appealing aspects of the budget Vallarta Sun Suites & Hotel — an otherwise dated condo complex with a difficult owner. Apartment-style units have full kitchens, small living rooms, and outdoor balconies, but decor and amenities are incredibly dated. There’s a small pool and outdoor lounge area, but the best part of Vallarta Sun Suites is its location in Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romantica. The neighborhood’s atmosphere is always lively and upbeat, which is probably why many guests complain of noisy surroundings. Much better accommodations can be had for comparable rates at nearby Garlands Del Rio, a boutique hotel with charming decor, a nice pool, and excellent breakfast. It’s still within walking distance of downtown, but it’s a bit farther from the beach than Vallarta Sun Suites.
