Surrounds can get
hectic
The 782-room Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers, first opened in 1974, is both one of the older and larger hotels in Hong Kong. Its busy Tsim Sha Tsui
location is great for tourists and shoppers, and also offers one of the best
uninterrupted views of the harbor in the city. A 2014 makeover has given the property a swanky upgrade, though room decor is on the minimal side. In-room amenities
-- 40-inch flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, electric kettles, and smartphone loan -- are suitably high-end. A charge
for Wi-Fi for most guests is an annoyance though a heated rooftop pool plus hot tub is an
excellent touch. Rates are also pretty fair for a luxury hotel, though it's also worth considering the hip, futuristic, and similarly priced Mira Hong Kong.
Scene
Upscale chain hotel with '70s heritage and elegant Art Deco interiors
While this luxury property lacks the
shimmering and soaring architecture of many of the city's hotels, its imposing main entrance -- decked out in metallic black and gold -- allows it to immediately exude a seriously upscale vibe. The lobby is an
impressively spacious swathe of polished marble floor, sleek Art Deco styling, and
smart geometric patterning -- a golden grand piano and elegantly sweeping
staircase complete the scene. Evidence of the property's 2014 makeover can be
seen throughout, with impeccably presented and spotless interiors finished in
genuinely high-end quality. It's also one of the few hotels in Hong Kong to
offer full views over Victoria Harbor in almost half its rooms, while an
external express elevator transports executive guests to the upper floors of
the towers and sky bar where the best uninterrupted panoramas can be found. A
rooftop pool on the 18th floor also offers a rare place to enjoy the sun
without the shadow of one of the city's myriad skyscrapers. Clientele are an even split between business
travelers and relatively well-heeled tourists comprising both couples and
families with children.
Location
Located on a busy junction at the southern end of Hong Kong's "Golden Mile"
This hotel is
located on the corner of Nathan Road and Salisbury Road -- two of the busiest
roads in the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district on the southern tip of the Hong
Kong peninsula. Positioned at the end of Hong Hong's "Golden Mile," it's surrounded by luxury boutiques, international retail chains, and hotels of
all types -- the SOGO shopping mall is also located right underneath the hotel. Both
MTR station Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui East are minutes' walk away; Tsim Sha Tsui connects to Central Station on
the island in under 10 minutes. Alternatively, the ferry pier to Central and Wan
Chai districts is just five minutes away on foot. Hong Kong International
Airport is around half an hour by road, traffic permitting.
Rooms
Simply decorated, minimal rooms with sleek marble bathrooms -- some with gorgeous harbor views
All of this hotel's 782 rooms benefitted from a refurbishment in 2014. The spaces are now neat and
freshly styled in unfussy neutral tones with simple contemporary furnishings that give all the rooms a minimal vibe. While all rooms have 40-inch flat-screen
TVs, iPod docks, and minibars, Wi-Fi is not free of charge in most cases
(though guests can benefit from smartphones with free calls and Internet
roaming). Signature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds do provide extra comfy slumber
and sleek, marble-finished bathrooms provide massage showers, wall-mounted
telephone, and robes and slippers. Almost half of the rooms feature superb
views of the harbor -- even from some bathrooms -- while other rooms overlook nearby
apartment blocks. Nice extras include an electric kettle, work desk with ergonomic chair, and safe.
Features
Heated rooftop pool and hot tub, several decent dining options, and fantastic harbor views
This Sheraton has a
decent selection of eateries, ranging from The Café -- serving a decent
breakfast buffet and meals throughout the day -- to a contemporary Chinese
restaurant, Japanese sushi restaurant, and a wine and seafood bar with harbor
views. The Sky Bar also provides cocktails or afternoon tea with even more
impressive vistas over the water. The rooftop pool is temperature controlled
with a surrounding terrace including sun loungers and hot tub. A fitness
room also provides plenty of exercise equipment in a sunny space with spectacular views over the
harbor. Executive-level guests also have access to the Tower Lounge with open
bar and hors d’oeuvres, as well as free Wi-Fi and breakfast service. Most guests will have to pay a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.
