The Regal Airport
Hotel is a huge, 1,171-room upscale property with direct access to Hong Kong
International Airport via a covered walkway. Rooms are functional, comfortable, and well-soundproofed from planes, though less so from internal noise. There are six restaurants and cafes on-site and the choice of
health and spa facilities is impressive. While the Regal's convenient location near the airport is hard to beat, it's also worth considering the Novotel Citygate, which is a five-minute drive away and offers more outdoor space.
Scene
Huge airport hotel with direct access to passenger terminal
The Regal Airport Hotel Hong Kong is considered by some as one
of the best airport hotels in the world, and with 1,171 guest rooms, 30 function spaces,
and six restaurants and bars, it is also one of
the largest. Stepping inside, the bright and spacious lobby area is flooded
with natural light from the central atrium that's dotted with palm trees
and features water pools and fountains. The interior design scheme is modern, with
plenty of polished granite and glass paneling, though it still has the corporate and
impersonal feel of an airport lounge. The property has little in the way of
outdoor space, but it is connected directly to the terminal of Hong Kong
International Airport by a covered, air-conditioned footbridge. Unsurprisingly, most guests are either passing through on a layover or early-morning passengers
and business travelers.
Location
Right next to Hong Kong airport and walking distance to AsiaWorld Expo center
The Regal Airport
Hotel Hong Kong is located on the northeast corner of Chek Lap Kok island with
a covered walkway connecting straight to the passenger terminal of Hong Kong
International Airport. There's nothing else surrounding the hotel besides
access roads and parking lots, but the airport has plenty of restaurants and hosts SkyPlaza shopping mall. The nearby Airport
Express Line connects from the airport to the city in 24 minutes by train, while
the AsiaWorld Expo center is a 10-minute walk or a short drive away.
Rooms
Functional rooms that are soundproofed against planes but still get internal noise
The hotel has
close to 1,200 rooms, most of which are decorated in simple neutral tones, with
polished dark-wood furnishings and carpeted floors. While the styling is
functional and modern in the majority of rooms, some of the renovated units sport more contemporary chic -- especially the
gorgeous Duplex Suite. Wi-Fi is available in all rooms for a fee and all units come equipped with 32-inch flat-screen TVs with satellite channels including CNN, BBC, the National Geographic Channel, and Discovery, as well as pay-per-view movies. Tea and coffee
facilities are provided together with minibars, while clean, modern bathrooms
have wall-mounted hairdryers and telephones. Although rooms are well
soundproofed from the airport noise outside, internal noise from hallways and
adjoining rooms can be a problem. Also, there have been some complaints of minor maintenance issues.
Features
Impressive range of eating and fitness facilities -- though limited free Wi-Fi
The hotel has an
impressive collection of eateries, which range from traditional Cantonese and
Sichuan spots with a la carte menus, to fresh Japanese sushi, to Western and international
buffet-style dining. Leisure and health facilities are also impressive,
offering guests both indoor heated and outdoor swimming pools, a 24-hour gym
with 28 pieces of exercise equipment, and the OM Spa, which has a sauna, a steam room,
a whirlpool hot tub, and a range of massage treatments. Practical features include two
airline check-in kiosks, while shuttle services connect to the nearby Citygate
shopping mall as well as between other Regal-brand hotels -- including the chain's city-center
hotel in Causeway Bay. Wi-Fi costs extra in rooms, though guests do get a free half-hour of connection that can be accessed in the lobby.
