The 63-room Ovolo West Kowloon is an upscale chain hotel with large rooms, making it an especially good pick for families or groups. A mix of sleek studios along with two-and three-bedroom suites with small kitchenettes including microwaves and sinks make up the room types. A long list of freebies helps this property stand out (and helps compensate for the lack of a full restaurant), including a 24-hour lounge with free, but limited in selection, breakfast, free coffee, beer, and snacks all day, and a drink-for-free happy hour. Stylish rooms feature, you guessed it, free minibars and a welcome snack bag, plus flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and contemporary bathrooms with walk-in showers. There’s even free self-serve laundry available. The nearest MTR station isn’t too far, about a 10-minute walk, but there’s no shuttle. The nearby Hotel Panorama by Rhombus offers several on-site eating options, including an upscale international restaurant on the 38th floor, but at rates that are slightly higher than Ovolo's.
Scene
Modern, chain hotel popular with families for generous room size
The upscale Ovolo West Kowloon has a sleek, industrial feel. Floors in the lobby are a mix of wood and stone, while funky white room dividers create some visual interest, and purple couches with colorful pillows provide a comfy spot to sit. Hallways have slate-colored flooring and huge, silver floor numbers on the walls. The 24-hour Lo Lounge is the center of activity. The space looks like a chic dining hall with long white tables and shiny spheres hanging from the ceiling. A lot of families stay at the hotel, and nibbles are available all day including sweet treats kids would love. Adults enjoy the free happy hour with hard liquor and appetizers in the space in the evenings. Overall, the property has an artistic, creative vibe with all of the freebies and extra space adding up to a somewhat residential level of convenience.
Location
Industrial area within 10-minute walk to MTR Station
The immediate surroundings of the Ovolo West Kowloon are industrial, but there are two MTR stations within a 10-minute walk -- Sham Shui Po and Nam Cheong. Either station can be used to travel to the Avenue of the Stars and Victoria waterfront, which is about a 30-minute trip overall. Guests will want to venture outside the neighborhood for restaurant and nightlife options, but there is plenty of shopping areas, markets, and restaurants within a 30-minute ride on public transportation. The airport is less than a half-hour drive, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Sleek, spacious rooms with kitchenettes
Like the rest of the Ovolo West Kowloon, rooms are modern with clean lines. Wood floors and steel kitchenette areas give the space an industrial feel, while white walls and frosted bathroom doors add contemporary appeal. All rooms are furnished with Apple TVs with DVD players and free Wi-Fi. Kitchenette areas have sinks and microwaves, free minibars are stocked daily, and a free loot bag on arrival contains snacks. Xbox and Wii game systems as well as iPads are offered when available. Bathrooms are modern with walk-in showers with rain showerheads and Malin+Goetz toiletries. Some rooms offer sea views, and two- and three- bedroom suites are available. Due to both size and amenities, these appealing rooms have a somewhat residential feel, making them popular with families that are seeking some of the conveniences of home.
