Bottom Line

Even though it's not on the water, the upper-middle-range Metropark Hotel Causeway Bay Hong Kong only has a public park between it and the Victoria Harbor, giving it stellar views. Its rooftop pool makes the most of this from a 33-story perch, and the Cafe du Parc's fusion cuisine is good enough to attract many locals for lunch and dinner. But not all 266 rooms are createdequal; breakfast is only included in Executive Rooms and Suites, and the small Standard Rooms also miss out on the coveted harbor views. It's worth comparing rates -- and views -- with the Harbour Grand Hong Kong, which also has an outdoor pool.

Scene

An airy upscale high-rise with excellent views but little lobby seating

One of several Metropark hotels scattered around Hong Kong, this 33-story high-rise has mostly wonderful views of the nearby park and the harbor beyond. Its bright lobby has a facade of floor-to-ceiling windows that soar up several stories, with cream-colored columns and twin escalators leading up to a marbled reception floor. The blonde-wood front desk, covered with marbled, jade-colored panels and recessed lighting, occupies a full wall. But aside from a few pairs of velvet armchairs with little metal side tables, there's little in the way of lounging spots, and the hotel's excessive use of marble, glass, and chrome is the very opposite of cozy.

Location

Near the MTR Tin Hau Station and Victoria Park

The Metropark Hotel Causeway Bay Hong Kong is just down the street from MTR Tin Hau Station and Hong Kong's biggest public green space, Victoria Park. The main MTR Causeway Bay Station is a 13-minute walk, and the popular Times Square Shopping Mall is just a few minutes farther. Depending on traffic, it's about a five-minute drive to the harbor and Wan Chai Ferry Pier, with the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre another two minutes away. Expect a 40-minute drive to Hong Kong International Airport.

Rooms

A wide range of sizes, views, and amenities, but similarly dated decor

The hotel's 266 rooms have upscale but decidedly dated decor consisting of patterned blue carpets and rounded light-wood furnishings with frosted-glass accents. Many have curved walls and windows with built-in ledges that double as small desks making the most of the view. The small Standard Rooms come in two varieties -- those with harbor views and those that face neighboring towers. All rooms have minibars and electric tea kettles, but no coffeemakers. Family and Executive Rooms are much larger, with the latter also having big work desks and bathrooms that add separate soaking tubs to the standard walk-in showers. Executive Parlour Rooms and Suites also include guest access to the Panorama Lounge, which serves a free breakfast.

Features

Rooftop pool, fitness center, sauna, fusion cuisine and buffet, plus free area shuttle

Metropark's rooftop pool has unobstructed, panoramic views from its 33-story perch. There isn't much of a sundeck, but it has just enough space for a few chairs and a small whirlpool. The rooftop also houses a small fitness center with treadmills and other cardio machines, as well as a sauna. There's a staffed business center on the second floor, with printing and translation services. Three meeting rooms are on the seventh floor, the largest of which can accommodate 40 people. For dining, the hotel Cafe du Parc, with an open kitchen and a buffet, serves Asian and international fusion cuisine that's popular with locals. On the casual side, Vic's pub serves snacks and hosts occasional live music. Executive Parlour Rooms and Suites guest get access to the Panorama Lounge, where coffee, snacks, and a free breakfast is served by city skyline views. A free shuttle bus operates from the hotel to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in nearby Wan Chai.
