The three-and-a-half-pearl Citadines Mercer Hong Kong is a modern apartment hotel in the busy Sheung Wan District, located a short walk from shopping, dining, the MTR station, and ferry to Macau. Unlike many Hong Kong properties the Citadines Mercer has a fitness center, decent free hot breakfast buffet with Chinese and Western items, and a Michelin-star sushi restaurant. The 55 serviced studio and one-bedroom apartments have more space than the typical Hong Kong hotel room, and all come with kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, CD/DVD players, and flat-screen TVs. Travelers who don’t need an apartment might consider the nearby Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Soho. Rates are lower, but it doesn’t have a pool or fitness center.
Scene
Modern hotel with serviced apartments and relaxed atmosphere
Citadines Mercer Hong Kong is housed in a 31-floor building on a narrow footprint in the busy Sheung Wan District. The reception area is quite small and has limited seating, so it isn't really a focal point of guest interaction. Guests usually escape the heat with the fitness center and breakfast room, which becomes an all-day lounge after breakfast concludes. With its kitchenette apartments the hotel’s a particularly convenient choice for travelers on an extended stay, and business guests benefit from having the Central business district not far away. Tourists are drawn to the relaxed atmosphere, relative affordability for the area, and location not far from shopping, nightlife, and the ferry terminals.
Location
Central Sheung Wan location, a three-minute walk from the MTR station
Citadines Mercer is in the busy Sheung Wan District in an area thick with shops, restaurants, and bars. Public transportation is close at hand: the Hollywood Terrace - Queen's Road Central bus stop is a two-minute walk and the Sheung Wan MTR station and Hillier Street tram are both about a three-minute stroll. Attractions like the Western Market (the city's oldest surviving market) and Man Mo Temple (one of city's oldest temples) are both within a five-minute walk, as is Hollywood Road with its antiques and handicrafts shops. Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal is a five-minute drive or 10-minute walk, and Central Ferry Piers (serves outlying islands and Kowloon) are a little less than five minutes by car or a little more than a 10-minute walk. The Central business district is five minutes by car or about 10 minutes via tram from Hillier Street. Hong kong International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, or guests can take a 15-minute MTR ride to Hong Kong Station and then a 40-minute Airport Express ride to the airport.
Rooms
Contemporary apartments with kitchenettes, CD/DVD players, and iPod docks
Citadines Mercer Hong Kong has 55 studio and one-bedroom apartments. The units range from 240-square-feet (22 square meters) to 410-square-feet (38 square meters), so the smaller units get a few complaints for their size, but they're not at all small by Hong Kong hotel standards. The apartments feature high-quality furnishings and bedding, and many have elements liked padded walls or wood floors -- but with their minimalist decor and neutral beige-tan color palette some may find the rooms a bit plain. Units all come with free Wi-Fi, iPod docks with radios and alarm clocks, CD/DVD players with stereo speakers, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Two unexpected features also come standard: a refrigerated minibar with free soft drinks and beer (re-stocking for a fee) and free use of a cellphone with Wi-Fi, unlimited 3G data, and free local calls. Each unit also has a kitchenette with sink, microwave oven, mini-fridge, electric kettle, cookware, and tableware. An induction cooker is available upon request, and some units have Nespresso machines. Bathrooms are stylishly designed and come with hairdryers, scales, and bathtubs with handheld showers. The main issue with the bathrooms is their transparent glass walls that make them visible from the bedroom, thereby compromising privacy, but blinds can be pulled.
Features
Free hot breakfast buffet, and Michelin-star sushi restaurant
The Citadines Mercer has a fairly extensive list of property features, highlighted by the fitness center. It has large windows framing views of the surrounding area, and features flat-screen TVs, several cardio machines, weight machines, and some free weights. The free breakfast buffet serves Chinese and Western fare, and hot items including cooked-to-order eggs. The hotel shares a building with the three-star Michelin-rated Japanese restaurant Sushi Shikon, one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Hong Kong. The Citadines also offers a 24-hour front desk, 24-hour security, and airport transfer for a fee. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. The hotel has no on-site parking, but nearby public parking is available for a fee.
