Complaints of bothersome noise from the neighborhood
The best thing about the mid-range Butterfly on Wellington is its location in a bustling neighborhood in Hong Kong's city center, making it easy to reach Central Market, restaurants, The Center, and public transportation. This boutique offers 80 pleasant rooms with the basics like flat-screen TVs and kettles, and the option of high-tech amenities like free smartphones, air purifiers, and mobile hot spot devices. If location attracts travelers, the lack of breakfast, restaurants, pool, or a gym -- detracts them. For about the same price, travelers should check out Lan Kwai Fong Hotel which has a Michelin-star restaurant and a gym.
Scene
Modern hotel with a clean design, impersonal vibe, and few public spaces
Butterfly on Wellington isn’t the epitome of a welcoming hotel -- it lacks leisure and business amenities which can make the room prices feel a bit steep. However, it has a clean, modern design, contemporary rooms, and a perfect location, which is why it still attracts a good number of couples and business travelers to its doors. Overall, the impression is a little impersonal, as public spaces are limited to one lounge area with comfy chairs, public desktops, and a coffee machine. This is not a place where travelers will interact with guests or staff much. Due to the booming location, construction occurs occasionally and traffic can be bothersome.
Location
Three-minute walk to The Central Market
Hands-down, the location is the best aspect of the Butterfly on Wellington. The Central Market is just a three-minute walk away. The Landmark, a nine-minute walk away, provides tons of designer boutiques. There’s a huge concentration of restaurants, shops, and businesses on surrounding streets and within walking distance. Business travelers should note that it’s across the street from The Center and takes only 18 minutes on foot to reach the International Finance Center. Many restaurants, shops, and attractions can be reached on foot from the hotel, but for those that are too far, there’s a bus stop and a tram stop that take five minutes to reach. A train stop that’s a 17-minute walk away takes passengers to the airport.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and high-tech amenities like free smartphones
The 80 rooms at Butterfly on Wellington are modern, clean, and fairly spacious for Hong Kong. The units start at 210 square feet and work their way up to 380 square feet. The decor is warm and welcoming with tan and brown color schemes and touches of reds or oranges in statement walls and pillows. There’s a heavy emphasis on traditional wooden furniture, though it still looks contemporary in style. Amenities in rooms include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, safes, air-conditioning, and kettles. Some rooms have mini-fridges and Nespresso machines, and the Suites have air purifiers. A selection of upper-level rooms include high-tech amenities like free smartphones for guests to use during their stay with free unlimited calling and 3G, as well as 4G pocket Wi-Fi devices that can be taken around the city and used as a mobile hot spot. The bathrooms are lovely with spherical vessel sinks and glass showers with waterfall showerheads. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided. There are fantastic city views from the top floors. Take note that this area is quite busy and guests have complained about bothersome noise from nearby construction sites and traffic.
Features
Free Wi-Fi, public computers, mobile hot spots, and free smartphones
There aren’t a lot of extras at Butterfly on Wellington. It lacks breakfast, a restaurant or bar, meeting rooms, and leisure facilities. What it does provide is access to the internet. It has free Wi-Fi in rooms and public spaces, as well as a small lounge with a coffeemaker and two iMac public desktop computers. A 4G pocket Wi-Fi device is available to guests, though some rooms are equipped with it already. Guests can take the Wi-Fi device around town and use it as a mobile hot spot for up to five devices. The hotel has a concierge on-site that can help with questions and concerns, but beyond that, there’s little else in the way of amenities.
