Best Western Hotel Causeway Bay

Tucked at the end of a busy local market, the Best Western Hotel Causeway Bay is an inconspicuous hotel that serves as a decent home base amid one of Hong Kong's shopping meccas. While there is a bit of Eastern flare to the style here, in the end this is a simple property that's most notable for its often stunning views and easy access to Causeway Bay. There isn't much in the way of common space -- don't expect a buzzy bar or restaurant scene -- and the only shared amenity is the small rooftop plunge pool. That's fine, as the hotel usually empties out during the day while travelers explore the surrounding area's megamalls, boutiques, restaurants, and bars. The decor throughout is dark and the hotel feels a bit cramped on the whole, but rates are some of the lowest in the area. With that in mind, you do get what you pay for, and the hotel attracts budget-conscious groups, couples, and solo travelers. 

The hotel's immediate setting is entirely authentic, despite being close to some of Hong Kong's most famous shopping destinations. That's because the Best Western sits at the end of a bustling wet market -- packed with produce vendors, butchers, and seafood stalls as well as cheap local dining spots. It's photo-worthy, but the chaotic and slightly messy atmosphere won't be everyone's cup of tea. However, the Causeway Bay area itself couldn't be more different, as some of the city's most famous malls and luxury retailers are packed into towers soaring all around. It's only a five-minute walk to Times Square Mall, where you'll also find the Causeway Bay MTR. There are countless restaurants, bars, and cafes in this part of town, and it's easy enough to reach other trendy areas, like Soho and Central. Those are only three stops away on the MTR, as is Tsim Sha Tsui (the latter by transferring at Admiralty). You can reach the airport by taking the Airport Express train from Hong Kong Station, which is connected to the Central MTR station and takes about an hour altogether. A taxi to the airport can take anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic. 

Without a doubt, the major selling point of the rooms here are the views, which are best taken from higher-floor units that are worth the extra price. From these floors, you'll get amazing vantages on the peaks of Hong Kong Island and the soaring skyscrapers all around the hotel. Some even look across Victoria Harbour to Kowloon Island. That's a good thing, as the rooms themselves are fairly dark and cramped, with a bit of wear evident. Rooms in Hong Kong are rarely large, but these felt especially small on our 2018 tour, especially given the design details: dark patterned wallpaper, heavy drapes, and pine-hued wood-veneer furniture. Still, if you only need a reasonably priced place to crash after a day out shopping and touring Hong Kong, the rates here can be a steal (especially in this part of town). Features are limited to free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, basic minibars, electric kettles, safes, and air-conditioning. Keep in mind that smoking units are available. Bathrooms are likewise tiny, but modern, with either showers or shower/tub combos plus basic toiletries and just a bit of counter space. There are hanging areas for clothes, but nor proper closets. The hotel's Sky Villas arguably have the best views in the house, and are best for couples. They're especially small, but come with large private terraces and jetted balcony tubs that hang over the city below. 

As a city hotel that's mostly used for recharging at night, the features here are pretty limited. They include a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a selection of Asian and Western food. Breakfast is included in some rates, though most travelers tend to eat at restaurants in the neighborhood. A rooftop plunge pool is a nice place to cool off and the views of the peaks of Hong Kong Island and surrounding skyline are impeccable. It's located on the 39th floor. Otherwise, a computer station and free Wi-Fi round out the features.
