Scene

Modern hotel housed in a historical building

Housed in a historical building originally built in 1920, GDM Megaron Hotel doesn't quite live up to it's self-proclaimed luxury status, but it's still one of the nicest hotels in the city. While the building is old, the interiors are fresh and modern with the only historical elements found in glass cabinets in the lobby. Decor throughout the hotel is understated, featuring elegant lighting and mostly neutral tones, with the occasional pop of color in a sofa or feature wall. The rooftop is a highlight here, with the narrow swimming pool, surrounding sun loungers and parasols, and rooftop bar all offering views of the Old Harbor. While the main restaurant doesn't have as great of views, it still overlooks the harbor and has both indoor and outdoor seating. Decor in the restaurant and bar is fresh and modern, with a relaxing atmosphere. Guests here are mostly leisure travelers, though the central location and available business facilities also attract a few business travelers.

Location

Central location overlooking the Old Harbor

Located in the heart of Heraklion city on the northern coast of Crete, GDM Megaron Hotel overlooks the Old Harbor of Heraklion. It's located in the center of the business and shopping district, with numerous dining facilities within walking distance from the hotel. It's a six-minute walk to the harbor, as well as to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Lion Square (the center of the city) has more shops, restaurants, and entertainment spots, and is accessible within a 10-minute walk from the hotel. It's a 19-minute drive outside the city to Knossos, the ruins of the oldest known city in Europe. There is a local bus stop a three-minute walk from the hotel. The Heraklion Airport is nine minutes by car from the hotel.

Rooms

Modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and some with sea views

The 58 guest rooms are modern with classic decor. The same decor can be found throughout all room varieties, including wooden floors and furniture, dark blue velvet curtains, sofa, and corner chair, white walls, and beige linens. Decor is kept simple with a few framed pieces of art, standard lampshades, and a full length mirror on the wall. Amenities in all rooms include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, tea- and- coffee-making facilities, sound systems, work desks, telephones, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms include shower/tub combos, along with small wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and Korres toiletries. Bathrobes and slippers are provided. All rooms have either city of harbor views and most rooms feature a private standing balcony. The two Presidential Suites all overlook the Aegean sea and the Venetian fortress and have in-room hot tubs.

Features

Restaurant, rooftop bar, narrow swimming pool, fitness center, event facilities, and business center

The stunning view of the Aegean Sea and Venetian fortress is the main feature here, which the hotel takes full advantage of. The hotel's rooftop bar, 5th, serves both dinner (including Cretan and Mediterranean cuisine) and a selection of beverages while offering lovely sea views. The rooftop also features the hotel's narrow outdoor swimming pool, with surrounding sun loungers and parasols. A free American buffet breakfast is served each morning in Plaza Cafe and Bar, the hotel's restaurant. The restaurant is also open for lunch, dinner, and drinks. A small, 24-hour fitness room offers a couple of mismatched cardio machines and some weight-training equipment. While there is no spa for services, the fitness center also includes a hot tub, sauna, and hammam. There are a total of four meeting and banquet rooms available, catering for between 40 to 200 guests. The business center includes a lounge area for informal meetings and presentations as well as various work stations. Wi-Fi throughout the property. On-site parking is free.
