The two-pearl Hostel Diana Park is one of the best budget options in the city. It's got a great central location close to tons of restaurants and bars, and it's a five-minute walk to the Design Museum. Dorms that are included in the property's 15 units show wear, but all spaces are still attractive, with fun bedding and some have dark parquet floors. They range in size from private singles to mixed and female-only to dorms that sleep up to eight people. All have in-room sinks and most private rooms have flat-screen TVs, but none have en-suite bathrooms, and there's no AC. Breakfast isn't included, but there's a well-equipped communal kitchen. Travelers looking for stay with a restaurant can consider Eurohostel, but it isn't as centrally located.
Scene
Subdued downtown youth hostel for groups of friends and solo travelers
Hostel Diana Park caters to budget travelers and a younger backpacking crowd looking for an affordable room in the city center. It doesn't have activities, entertainment, or a cheap on-site bar that other hostels might have, but there's a communal area outside of the kitchen with funky and colorful vintage decor. An old staircase with a wrought iron banister leads up to a cramped reception area with a front desk. Wide, high-ceiling hallways contain amenities typically found in a lobby -- there's a couch and computer workstation down one, and a bulletin board and bookshelf filled with magazines down another.
Location
Centrally located near bars, restaurants, and attractions
The hostel is in the city center on a busy one-way street, with plenty of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants within walking distance. The Design Museum Helsinki is a five-minute walk and Esplanadi Park, where visitors come to picnic and enjoy live music in the summer, is six-minutes away on foot. The harbor and Market Square, where local purveyors sell items except in winter, are both within a 15-minute walk. The airport is about a 25-minute drive, or about 47 minutes via public transportation.
Rooms
Playful decor and high ceilings, but no en-suite bathrooms or AC, and dorms show wear
Dorms at Hostel Diana Park could use a refresh, with marked up walls, chipping paint, and scuffed floors, and there's no AC in any of the property's units. But spaces are attractive, with high ceilings, and some have hardwood floors. The mostly black-and-white decor has pops of yellow or blue, and curtains and linens have playful patterns. Shared dorms sleep four to eight people on bunk beds, and there's a female-only dorm that also sleeps eight. Each bunk has a reading light and a private locker. Private rooms come in singles, doubles, and triples (all with twin beds, either separate or pushed together). All but the triples have flat-screen TVs, and some have small desks or seating areas with mod scoop chairs. Free Wi-Fi is included and all rooms and dorms have sinks, but none have private bathrooms. Units have views of the street or inner courtyard.
Features
Communal kitchen and free coffee/tea, but no bar or activities, and fee for breakfast
The hostel has a well-equipped communal kitchen with a full-size refrigerator, microwave, toaster, oven, and stovetop. Free coffee and tea is on offer 24/7, and breakfast is available at an extra charge. The kitchen has a dining room with several tables, and there's a cozy window nook with another table and bench seating. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and there's also a workstation in the hall with a dated computer.
