Scene

A meticulously curated guest house with antique treasures

Casa 1932 sits on a calm and residential street typical of Havana -- lined with colorful rows of crumbling colonial homes in pretty, faded pastels. By contrast, this building proudly stands in mint condition with a neutral stone exterior, marked by a regal cast-iron emblem at its entrance. As its name suggests, the home was built in 1932 -- originally belonging to owner and host Luis’ grandfather. Back then, the home accommodated rehearsals from Cuba’s first jazz band, and black-and-white photographs on the walls capture the home’s fascinating musical and family history. The interior remains as a showcase of Art Nouveau meets Deco era craftsmanship, that unfolds like a treasure trove of antiques and Old Worldly artifacts. Every decor component has been thoughtfully curated by Luis, an interior designer by trade, and a bona fide character by nature. Guests here are attracted to the property's history, timeless architecture, and the host's genuine Cuban warmth.

Location

A central spot just off the Malecon, walking distance to museums, nightlife, and iconic sights

Casa 1932 is located in the residential pocket of Centro Havana -- which happens to be near many must-see local sights. The iconic coastal promenade, the Malecon, runs perpendicular to the street on which Casa 1932 sits -- so guests can be on the water within a two-minute walk. Other walkable highlights include the Museum of the Revolution (15 minutes), the nightlife hub of Vedado (15 minutes), the restored 16th century fortress, Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta (15 minutes), El Capitolio (20 minutes), and a number of museums such as Museo de Bellas Artes and Musee Des Beaux Arts Cuban (all around 15 minutes). But Old Havana is a bit of a hike, 25 minutes on foot, or nine minutes by car. Staff can assist with cabs. It’s about 32 minutes from Jose Marti International Airport.

Rooms

Choice of three thoughtfully decorated rooms, full of Old World flair

Three rooms are available at Casa 1932 -- Economic, Executive, and Deluxe, catering to different budgets. All are beautifully presented and styled with Old World flavor and genuine timber antiques, however the Executive and Deluxe categories are the most lavish with their generous layouts, soaring ceilings, and original vintage floor tiling. Decor is deeply atmospheric, from the one-off antiques, to the exquisite chandelier and Art Deco light fixtures, to the teacups. All rooms feature air-conditioning, portable fans, and soaps. Deluxe and Executive Rooms include other perks like stocked mini-fridges, TVs, safes, hairdryers, and tea-making facilities. While the Economic Room is somewhat cramped and foregoes some of the grandeur and perks of higher categories, it remains a comfortable option for the budget-conscious traveler. Bathrooms are all colorful, spotless, and a decent size (other than the Economic’s which is teeny), with shower stalls and plenty of vintage flair in the tiling, lighting, and eclectic ornaments. Daily housekeeping is provided.

Features

A common rooftop, homemade meals (fee), and warm, helpful host

As a petite guest house, Casa 1932 doesn't offer the features of a hotel: there's no pool, gym, or Wi-Fi on the premises. There is, however, a spacious sunny rooftop with plastic seating and views over the street for guests who want to lounge and sunbathe. Common spaces to laze about also include the spectacular living room and the sunlit atrium courtyard. For dining, delicious homemade breakfasts and dinners are also on offer, along with excellent espresso coffee (all at extra cost). An unlimited supply of fresh drinking water is available to guests, too. Host, Luis -- full of character -- gives guests endless local insight. He also runs Havana Super Tours -- a selection of themed tours (mob, cigar, Art Deco) in classic cars around Havana -- available to guests at extra cost.
