Located inside the CNIT shopping mall in the Paris business district of La Defense, the 148-room mid-range Hilton Paris La Defense serves a lot of business travelers. The hotel, though, looks dated when compared with the ultra-contemporary mall that houses it, and guests have complained about wear and tear in the rooms, spotty in-room Wi-Fi (which comes with a fee), faulty outlets, malfunctioning TVs, and slow elevators, but praise the size of the rooms and the comfort of the beds. While the location is not the Paris of charm and animated street life, the hotel is within walking distance of the La Defense transportation hub, where travelers can catch the RER A or the metro Line 1, and be in central Paris in about 20 minutes -- both lines shoot straight down the Champs-Elysees. Note that the Hilton Paris La Defense often offers lower rates on the weekends, when the business travelers have left.
Scene
Chain hotel with a business emphasis
The marble-floored lobby and soaring glass walls are mostly of a piece with the mall that houses the hotel. The lobby is built in a circle and overlooks an interior atrium of the mall. The sleek Cote Parvis restaurant and the Tangerine Bar provide places for guests to mingle between business meetings. Because of its location at La Defense and its proximity to many major companies and offices, the hotel draws mostly business travelers, at least during the week. Couples are a common sight, too -- especially on weekends.
Location
A few blocks from the center of La Defense, Paris’ major business district, and about a 20-minute trip to the heart of the city
The hotel is situated inside a gigantic shopping mall on the western outskirts of Paris. The streets here have little charm and tend to empty out at night, which makes some guests feel ill at ease. Trains at the nearby La Defense station, reached after crossing a few industrial walkways, get to Chatelet Les Halles, the center of the city, in about 20 minutes. Going in the other direction, the RER goes to Versailles Palace. Charles de Gaulle Airport is also on the RER, connecting to the airport at Les Halles station.
Rooms
Taupe and white furnishings, with a '60s-aesthetic carpet; otherwise plain; some dated fixtures
The decor in the 148 rooms is calming, if slightly worn: Laminate wood headboards and bed frames, taupe wallpaper, and brown-patterned carpeting gives the rooms a slight retro air. Some guests have complained about damaged outlets and stained furniture cushions. Larger rooms have cozy built-in couches, and desktop LED lights. Suites include separate living and sleeping areas. All rooms have minibars, large bathrooms with shower/tub combos, safes, flat screen TVs, and work desks and spaces. Some rooms face the interior lobby and mall below.
Features
Nine meeting rooms, and a fitness center
Features at this Hilton property focus on business travelers. Large meeting rooms, some of which have projection capabilities, are striking, with glass walls and views onto the plaza areas around La Defense. The fitness center has a range of weight-training and cardio equipment, including elliptical machines and treadmills, and a selection of free weights. The restaurant Cote Parvis, serves French and international cuisine, and the Tangerine Bar does a contemporary take on French fare. Breakfast buffet is free daily, but there are charges for parking and Wi-Fi.
