Scene

Peaceful beachfront hotel popular with families and self-catering vacationers

With its shaker shingled exterior and blue-and-white awnings, it's immediately clear that the Beachcomber both embraces its name and looks the part of an eastern Long Island beach getaway. The lobby of the hotel is small, but bright and clean, with fresh duck egg green decor with white cladding on the walls and white-washed wood floors. A stand of tourist information leaflets is provided. The property is kept clean throughout, and the facilities are all well-maintained. The exterior of the property is attractive -- rooms are set out in two-story blocks surrounded by lush green lawns. The vibe overall is laid-back and low-key; don't expect a party-hard atmosphere, the likes of which is creeping into Montauk with a quickness. While most of the units are individually owned vacation rentals, the hotel operates like a traditional property, with a front desk and typical mid-range amenities. This is a popular pick with families and couples on summer holidays, and many guests come back year after year.

Location

Quiet spot outside of Montauk, across the street from the beach

The Beachcomber Resort is in a quiet part of Montauk, a pretty, laid-back surfing and fishing town which counts designer Ralph Lauren among its glamorous residents. There's a beautiful sandy beach just across the street from the property, and it’s a 15-minute walk into downtown Montauk where there is a good range of restaurants, ice cream parlors, shops, cafes, and bars. The Puff 'n Putt Family Fun Center is a 10-minute walk from the property, and offers boat rentals and mini-golf. For a change of scenery, Ditch Plains -- the best-known Montauk beach for surfing -- is a five-minute drive from the hotel. East Hampton Airport is around a half-hour drive from the hotel, while the Montauk train station (the end of the Long Island Rail Road) is a five-minute drive from the property. The hotel is a two-hour-and-forty-five-minute drive from New York City, though that varies wildly depending on weekend traffic.

Rooms

Individually decorated rooms, all with balconies and sea views

There are a variety of room types available at the Beachcomber, from Studio to Two Bedroom Suites, which are ideal for families or groups. Most of the units are privately owned, so no two are the same. However, many have appropriately beachy decor, with fresh blue and white color schemes and accents like carpeting, and plush couches and chairs. Walls are mostly white, and have either old-school landscape paintings or more modern natural or seaside-inspired art on the walls. The look is cozy, and offers a home-like level of comfort. Despite differences in design, all rooms provide the same features including air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, living area, and a full kitchen with dishwasher, stove, microwave, full-size refrigerator plus a toaster, coffeemaker, and crockery and cutlery. All units have an ocean-facing balcony with gorgeous sea views, and some have fireplaces too. Wi-Fi is free, although the connection is poor in some rooms. Daily housekeeping is provided in all rooms.

Features

Easy beach access, tennis court, and outdoor heated pool

The Beachcomber doesn't offer too many on-site features, but the requisite necessities are in place for an excellent beachside vacation. There's a heated outdoor pool that's surrounded by lounge chairs and tables with parasols, plus male and female saunas and a tennis court. All facilities are clean and well-maintained. Parking and Wi-Fi are both free. Many guests stay here for the easy beach access, which is a big bonus as the sand here tends to be a lot quieter than other stretches in Montauk. Access is across the road, through a pretty sand dune pathway.
