Bottom Line

Blocky and rather unattractive from the outside, the Apartment-Hotel Hamburg Mitte is a 120-room upper-middle-range hotel about three miles from the city center. It sits in an uninteresting corporate area, directly on a canal. Most rooms have well-stocked kitchenettes, making it a good choice for families or those on longer stays, but it’s a 25-minute trip into downtown by public transit. Rooms are spacious, clean, and pleasant, with balconies looking onto the street. Some apartment hotels lack reception and public spaces, but this one has an attractive, welcoming lounge and a large inviting lobby. Travelers willing to trade in the kitchenette for a better location should consider the Prizeotel Hamburg-City. It’s in the same price category and has a fun, cheeky design, but it’s just 12 minutes from downtown by public transit.

Scene

Pleasant, light-filled lobby with cozy seating and cool design touches

The Apartment-Hotel Hamburg Mitte isn’t much to look at from the outside, but inside the lobby is light-filled, contemporary, and surprisingly pleasant. Large-scale photos of ships are a nod to Hamburg’s important port, and a large built-in bookcase next to a seating area with plush cream loveseats adds a homey touch. Cool design elements include chunky side tables and funky light fixtures, but hallways are a bit drab, and the cigarette machine in the lobby brings the hotel down a notch. Still, the lounge elevates the look again with light-wood floors and furniture and light-blue houndstooth accents that match the chairs. Guests here are pretty evenly split between business travelers and families making use of the spacious Family Rooms.

Location

Outside of downtown in a corporate/industrial area with good public transit connections

The Apartment-Hotel Hamburg Mitte is located in Hamburg’s Hamm neighborhood, about three miles east of downtown. In a corporate area surrounded by offices and industrial buildings, it’s convenient for those who have business in the area but out of the way for leisure travelers interested in the city’s sights. Within walking distance are one or two restaurants, but nothing else of interest. From the hotel it’s a 15-minute walk to the U-Bahn, but there’s good bus service from just across the street into town. - Nine-minute drive to downtown shopping at Mönckebergstrasse (20 minutes by public transit)

  • 10-minute drive to the Kunsthalle Hamburg art museum (20 minutes by public transit )
  • 10-minute drive to Hamburg’s Hauptbahnhof (main train station) (20 minutes by public transit)
  • 12-minute drive to the hip Neuer Wall shopping street (25 minutes by public transit)
  • 15-minute drive to Alster Park (25 minutes by public transit)
  • 20-minute drive to Hamburg Airport (50 minutes by public transit)

Rooms

Comfortable, functional rooms sleep from one to six, most have kitchens, and all have balconies

Rooms at the Apartment-Hotel Hamburg Mitte have contemporary decor that’s pleasant and functional, though not the height of style. Color schemes vary, but all rooms have white walls and light-wood furnishings; some have carpet and some have hardwood floors. Rooms are spacious starting at 195 square feet for a Single and 300 square feet for a Double, on up to 465 square feet for a Family Room that sleeps four or 600 square feet for joining Family Rooms that sleep up to six. Most but not all rooms have well-stocked kitchenettes (guests who don’t want a kitchenette can find better value closer to downtown). Kitchens include refrigerators, microwaves, electric two-burner stovetops, and sinks and come stocked with coffeemakers, kettles, pots, dishes, and cutlery. Each room has nightstands, a large table with plush chairs, and an efficient piece of modular furniture that includes an armoire, a work desk, and a luggage stand. Technology consists of a 39-inch flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, and a programmable safe big enough for a laptop. Each room has a balcony large enough for sitting, but unfortunately it's on plastic lawn chairs. Bathrooms are simple in cream and beige, with chrome fixtures and walk-in showers. Hairdryers and toiletries are not provided, but there are soap dispensers by the sink and in the shower.

Features

Limited to a stylish lounge and comfortable restaurant, buffet breakfast, free parking, and free Wi-Fi

The Apartment-Hotel Hamburg Mitte doesn’t have many amenities, but it does have a stylish bar/lounge and a restaurant -- a good thing considering there’s not much else in the neighborhood. Guests who opt for breakfast eat in the two-room restaurant, with lots of windows and plants and interesting backlit artwork. Meals here are reasonably priced and decent, and the buffet breakfast (for a fee) consists of eggs, sausages, cold meats and cheeses, pastries, rolls, muesli, cereals, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and tea. Surprisingly for a hotel that attracts a fair amount of business travelers, there's no business center, but Wi-Fi is free throughout. The hotel has free underground parking as well.
