Large-scale photos of ships are a nod to Hamburg’s important port, and a large built-in bookcase next to a seating area with plush cream loveseats adds a homey touch. Cool design elements include chunky side tables and funky light fixtures, but hallways are a bit drab, and the cigarette machine in the lobby brings the hotel down a notch. Still, the lounge elevates the look again with light-wood floors and furniture and light-blue houndstooth accents that match the chairs. Guests here are pretty evenly split between business travelers and families making use of the spacious Family Rooms.

From the hotel it’s a 15-minute walk to the U-Bahn, but there’s good bus service from just across the street into town.
