Bottom Line

Like a city unto itself, the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center is a huge indoor complex with more than 1500 guest rooms and suites, many of which look out over a glass atrium filled with perfectly manicured gardens and even a vineyard, as well as several restaurants and bars. With tons of kid-friendly activities and even a water park open in the summer, there’s plenty to fill a vacation. It's also close to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and has numerous meeting rooms of varying sizes, making it a popular place for conferences. There is a daily resort fee and extra fees for parking, so the costs can make this a pricey stay, but some travelers may find the convenience and luxury worth it.

Scene

European village crossed with an Old West ski lodge

This sprawling complex on a lake feels like a small European village, with stone buildings and arches, although it also has some quintessentially Texan touches. The park-like atrium exudes natural beauty and is filled with trees, shrubs, colorful flowers, and a river with rocks and waterfalls that winds its way through the space. Lanterns lead the way over wooden footbridges. The lobby looks somewhat like a ski lodge, with sloped wooden ceilings and dark metal chandeliers over leather couches and armchairs. The enormous property gets all sorts of travelers, but it's most popular with business travelers attending events at the on-site convention center and families with kids. Football fans should note that the resort also offers package deals for visitors coming to see Dallas Cowboys games.

Location

In a world of its own, but with other restaurants and attractions close by

Set near Silver Lake, the area surrounding the Gaylord Texan Resort has a rural feel. Although there is plenty to do on-site, guests with cars are within a short drive of numerous chain restaurants and outlet stores. The Silver Lake Marina, a five-minute drive away, offers mooring and boat rentals. The resort provides shuttle service to Grapevine, with more restaurants and shopping. AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, is 30-minutes away by car, as is downtown Dallas. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is a 10-minute drive away.

Rooms

Tastefully decorated rooms, some overlooking the atrium

The resort has 1,384 rooms and 127 suites, some with balconies with partial or full views of the atrium. Rooms facing the atrium side do get some noise from below, particularly on the lower floors, so light sleepers should request a room on a higher floor. The spaces are classically decorated and have modern decor touches, with chocolate-colored furniture, teal accents and gauzy, chevron-striped curtains.  Amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges with free bottled water, safes, irons, and ironing boards. Bathrooms are of the standard chain-hotel variety, with large vanities and curtained shower/tub combos.

Features

Several restaurants, pools, water park, and tons of meeting space

The resort has four restaurants, including a steakhouse and a barbecue joint, and room service is available 24-hours a day. The Glass Cactus Nightclub has nightly entertainment and the Silver Bar has an Old West theme. There’s also a coffee shop and several stores selling clothing, accessories, jewelry, and souvenirs. Swimmers can use a heated outdoor pool with a hot tub and an indoor lap pool. Paradise Springs, a massive western-themed pool and lazy river complex, is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There's also a large game room filled with arcade games for younger guests. The on-site fitness center has cardio machines and weight-training equipment, as well as a jogging trail, and the Relache Spa & Salon has a full menu of services and body treatments. The complex also has plenty of space for conferences, with 88 meetings rooms. Pricey extras include daily fees for self- and valet-parking and a small fee for a shuttle bus to Grapevine, though Wi-Fi is free throughout.
