Bottom Line

Sercotel Gran Hotel Luna de Granada is a contemporary three-and-a-half pearl hotel with a loyal following of domestic travelers. Major attractions like the Granada Cathedral and Alhambra are a lengthy walk or drive away, as the hotel is in the western part of the city. Extensive leisure offerings include indoor and outdoor pools, a kids' club, and a spa. It also has lots of event and meeting space, plus an Andalusian restaurant and bar. The 367 rooms have a simple, contemporary look, and include features like minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Travelers who want a more central hotel without sacrificing too many features might check out Granada Five Senses Rooms and Suites, which is often cheaper.

Scene

Contemporary hotel with a frequently busy vibe that's popular with domestic travelers

Sercotel Gran Hotel Luna de Granada is a lively spot that's unlike many of the small boutique properties in Granada. The hotel has the feel of a conference-center, and while it doesn't attract a ton of business guests, there are lots of features geared toward them here. Regardless, this place makes a decent home base for travelers who prefer a wealth of features over location. That go-big vibe starts right away, in the soaring atrium lobby with a fountain and palm trees. The style is simple and modern throughout the hotel, though corporate, with lots of neutral hues and little art. Still it remains popular with domestic tourists, and the atmosphere here is busy, with guests gathering everywhere from the lobby to the pools. There are a number of leisure offerings here that aren't usually seen in historic Granada, including some for kids, so expect to see plenty of families and couples.

Location

Off the highway in western Granada, a 15-minute walk to the cathedral

Sercotel Gran Hotel Luna de Granada is on a busy street just off the A-44 motorway west of central Granada. It's not a very scenic area and it's a bit far from major tourist attractions, but there are numerous shops, restaurants, and bars within a short walk of the hotel. The El Corte Ingles is across the street, and the Camino de Ronda bus stop is a three-minute walk. The top of Garcia Lorca Park is a 10-minute walk from the hotel and its grounds include the House Museum of Federico Garcia Lorca, the famous Spanish poet. The Renaissance-style Monastery of Saint Jerome, Granada Cathedral, and Royal Chapel are all about a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk from the hotel. The Alhambra is about a 10-minute drive, or a little over 30 minutes by bus, from the Sercotel. Expect a 10-minute drive to the train station as well. The Malaga - Costa del Sol Airport is a little over a 90-minute drive, and it takes about the same amount of time to reach Malaga proper.

Rooms

Spacious, contemporary rooms with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs

The spacious rooms at Sercotel Gran Hotel Luna de Granada have a pleasantly contemporary look that feels a bit corporate. Expect to see a neutral gray and beige. Padded headboards and velour throw pillows add a softer element alongside the ashen wood laminate paneling and floors. Sleek furniture is done in a similarly light tone. Rooms are clean, but there are occasional issues with the air-conditioning not functioning properly. Standard features include minibars, electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel charges a refundable deposit for safes. Suites add sitting areas, and Family Rooms have sofa beds (some have kitchens). Keep in mind that some double beds are two singles pushed together, which isn't always comfortable for sleeping. Balconies are also offered in a few rooms. The spacious and modern bathrooms come with hairdryers, bidets, make-up mirrors, and shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads. All public areas and rooms are non-smoking.

Features

Small indoor pool, seasonal outdoor pool, spa, and restaurant

Sercotel Gran has far more features than many of the Granada hotels that we've visited. Two swimming pools include an indoor heated pool and a seasonal unheated outdoor pool. Both are a bit small, so they can get crowded at high occupancy. The indoor pool has a glass roof that can be opened in warm weather, and drinks and snacks from the seasonal snack bar at the outdoor pool. A spa offers a wide range of massages, facials, and aromatherapies, and also includes hot and cold thermal pools, a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and rain shower. Unfortunately, there's a fee simply to enter it (as well as for treatments). There's also a small fitness center with a decent selection of basic equipment, and an artificial turf paddle tennis court. You'll have to pay a fee to access the latter. A colorful kids' club is open daily during high season, and on weekends the rest of the year. The breakfast buffet includes a good range of hot and cold items, and is available for an extra fee. The restaurant serves traditional Granadan and Andalusian cuisine with modern influences for lunch and dinner, though food doesn't always score high marks from previous guests. Room service is available. The Sercotel also has a stylish cafeteria and bar. Small pets are allowed for a nightly fee. A sundeck with city and Sierra Nevada views is a nice perk, and there's a business center plus tons of meeting and event space for up to 600 people. While Wi-Fi is free, parking costs extra.
